A Dalmore Tasting – The New Cigar Malt Reserve

The Whisky Boys were more than happy when we received a sample from The Dalmore Distillery.  So on Thursday 2nd February 2012 Jim and Nicola got together and looked forward to tonight’s wee tasting.

From away back in 1839 this grand old distillery has been producing Single Malts, originally owned by the Clan Mackenzie but now owned by Whyte and Mackay Ltd. From the Mackenzie Clan family crest comes the iconic Stags Head that adorns each bottle of Dalmore.

This distillery is ideally located on the banks of the Firth of Cromarty and uses dunnage system of warehousing which helps to give the Dalmore it’s great complexity.

Now let us get down to a wee bit of a tasting.

The Dalmore – Cigar Malt Reserve, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 44% Alc/vol 70cl

Matured for many a year in fabulous Oloroso “Matusalem” sherry butts which helps to give it the body and character to compliment a really fine cigar.

Colour…Havana Golddalmore-cigar-malt-whisky

Nicola’s Tasting

Nose…Hot cross buns, a bakers oven, fresh spicy hot bread.
Taste…Mango chutney, coconut, vanilla pod yoghurt, very creamy.
Finish…Medium and a delightfully smooth finish that is very creamy.

Score…3.5 Corks

Jim’s Tasting

Nose…Floral herbs and vanilla, spicy hot cinnamon, strong Dundee marmalade.
Taste…Caribbean fruits, creamy vanilla, crushed black pepper, sweet and tangy.
Finish…Long and quite drying, oak lingers a little, almost chewable.

Corks…4 Corks

Overall score…4 Corks

A typical Dalmore – delightful, elegant, ideal after dinner dram and Jim and Nicola think that at £70 a bottle it is not dear for such a grand dram, well done again all at Dalmore. This is one for everyone’s Whisky cabinet.

This bottle is only available in some specialist Whisky shops or certainly on-line.
