24.163 – A Wizard’s Spell!
50.8% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Px Butt ~ 31yo ~ Speyside ~ £1470.00
We gave it a mesmerising stare in the glass, a bright dark burnt umber colour which was followed by a magical wave of a wizard’s ‘Satya Sai Baba Nag Champa’ incense stick – a rich smell of frankincense, other fragrant herbs and resins. Incredibly gentle but still with a ‘tannic grip’, a perfect marriage between dark chocolate, Grand Marnier and candied orange rind – all in a truffle. A tiny drop of water and you will be on a magic carpet ride to Alcaiceria, the Great Bazaar of Granada, while on the palate you watched the sunset over the city and the Alhambra… read more
58.48 – Smokescreen
58.0% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Speyside ~ £57.00
A few startled glances were exchanged amongst panel members at first nosing of this dram. Initial notes included mentholated tobacco, big herbal qualities, sweetened medicines, tea tree oil and eucalyptus. The medicinal notes became more prominent with time, we found wintergreen, tar and tiger balm. Reduction brought a kiss of peat reek, farmhouse cider, smoked citrus jams, pollens and warm barley sugars. The neat palate was richly oily and packed with soft medicines, tobacco, silky gentle furls of peat smoke and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Water continued these medicated vibes of bonjella, witch hazel and cough syrup… read more
64.128 – Tradition Vs Modernity
58.3% ~ 1st Fill American & European Hogshead ~ 12yo ~ Speyside ~ £63.90
A massive hit of caramelised banana notes greeted the panel, and as they settled down, we baked sun-dried tomatoes in the oven. We enjoyed a mulled wine with allspice, cinnamon, cloves and orange zest and a slice of traditional Dundee cake made with raisins, almonds, orange zest and Seville marmalade. With just a drop of water, dark marzipan and chocolate rice pudding made an appearance. On the palate, pear chutney with red wine, chestnuts and lemon thyme, while in the finish there was a traditional mince pie… read more
72.111 – Balance and Harmony
61.9% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 15yo ~ Speyside ~ £75.60
We all associated the aroma somewhat with the colour green, kumquat (cultivar ‘Centennial Variegated), lime, honeydew melon, kiwi and pistachio ice cream. This theme carried on as we chewed on a green twig before we had a refreshing mint tea followed by a Berliner Weisse beer flavoured with sweet woodruff syrup giving it a vivid lime-cordial hue. Diluted the scent was that of strawberry tarts, flapjacks, butter icing and a new woolly jumper (of course green!), while to taste, lime cream mousse with cape gooseberries and the mint tea had now the addition of some lemon verbena… read more
