SMWS Outturn September 2020

SMWS Outturn September 2020 is now live.

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society release (outturn) several single cask bottlings of Scotch, Whisk(e)y, Rum and Gin, to name a few, on the first Friday of every month. Below is a full list of what the SMWS Global Gathering Outturn released on the 4th September 2020 has to offer.

This month there are 22 Scotch whiskies and 1. These whiskies include an 18-year-old Macallan and much, much more… These unique monthly bottlings are only available to buy by members of the Society. (Don’t worry you can join the SMWS here) but be quick several of the bottlings sell out as quickly as the day they are released.

R8.8 – Limbo Dancing in a Kilt

57.2% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Sauternes Barrique~ 21yo ~ Nicaragua

The nose brimmed with fruit (mango syrup, melon, papaya, pomegranate, pineapple, banana) and hints of bicycle tyre. 1.229 – Frisky, Fiesty and Full of PEP

63.3% ~ New Oak Hogshead ~ 8yo ~ Speyside

The nose, bold as a ballsy brigadier, had sherry, toasted oak and cinnamon; Christmas cake, molasses, dates and cherries in syrup. The palate tingled with chilli, ginger, clove rock, charred oak and leather – while its brown sugar, syrup and dried fruits kept us smiling….read more


4.256 – A Dark Palette Palate

56.0% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Pedro Ximenez Hogshead ~ 15yo ~ Highland

After 13 years in ex-bourbon wood we transferred this into a first-fill PX hogshead. The panel didn’t catch the smoke right away, but it soon become evident – smoked pork, kippers, smouldering peats and beach bonfires. Otherwise, the nose gave us the sweetness of toffee, marzipan, raisins and manuka honey….read more


5.73 – A Midsummer Night’s Dram

61.1% ~ Refill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 28yo ~ Lowland

The nose evokes old wood – grandparents’ dresser, roast chestnuts, creosoted sheds or the mischief-filled forest of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. There’s also lots of dried fruits – Dundee cake, sticky dates, dried figs, golden sultanas – the sweetness of agave syrup and moist Madeira cake, pipe tobacco….read more


7.243 – Twinning

59.8% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Pedro Ximenez Butt ~ 16yo ~ Speyside

54.8% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 16yo ~ Speyside

A gentle nose brought ripe orchard fruits, honey and a burst of pineapple, melon and redcurrants as peaches and pears laid the way for carnations, lavender and rose water. 11.40 – Old School Virtuosity

50.2% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 31yo ~ Highland

With a resounding “wow!” from the word go, it was apparent that what we discovered something special. Sophisticated fruits moved beyond simple terms to encapsulate oloroso sherry with waves of bruised apples, ripe papaya and pecans. 16.47 – The Steeplejack’s Delight

63.9% ~ Re-Charred Hogshead ~ 6yo ~ Highland

Chimney soot fell in black clouds onto charcoal and ash as meaty notes of burnt lamb chops and smoked brisket joined smoked trout and thick engine oil. 26.145 – Mood-Lifting Sanctuary

58.0% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel~ 8yo ~ Highland

The nose was floral and waxy, attractive and mood-lifting – vanilla candles, marshmallows, perfumed pear, crystallized orange and lemon slices and someone smoking a cigar outside a florist. 107.20 – Jelly Baby Massage Oil

65.3% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 7yo ~ Speyside

We found a rather spicy hit at first nosing, lots of Chinese duck glaze, five spice, cola syrup, black pepper, sweet malt extract, aniseed and pears in syrup. A little water brought rosehip tea, strawberry fudge, whipped ice cream, Battenberg cake, marjoram and chopped peanuts roasting in cooking oils. The mouth was initially very lively, hot and prickly. The nose is so exotic it’s – well, sexy – perfumed fruits, coconut, Moffat toffees, Trail Mix, honey, maple syrup and an orangerie. The scent of a perfumed begonia bouquet, fresh-cut cedar and a Persian sweet lemon with a highly fragrant hint of roses welcomed us with open arms. We were making hay while the sun shone, with fat bumble bees tootling around a nearby flower meadow. The nose neat was all over the place; sweet cured smoked bacon, medicinal mouth wash, burning a frankincense and myrrh scented candle as well as damp hay and a whiff of a nearby byer – take your pick. 77.66 – Fluttering Fan-Waft of Fruit

A complex nose of jasmine, hibiscus flowers, refreshers, delicate waxiness and a fluttering fan-waft of fruity aromas – dried mango, peaches, raspberry and Kir Royale.
