Find Your Whisky Rhythm – The Scotch Malt Whisky Society release (outturn) several single cask bottlings of Scotch, Whisk(e)y, Rum and Gin, to name a few, usually on the first Friday of every month. Below is a full list of what the SMWS “Find Your Whisky Rhythm” May 2021 outturn has to offer. The SMWS May 2021 outturn is released on Friday 7th May 2021.

26.175 – Emergency Decadence

62.1% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 7yo ~ Highland

An initial rush of fabrics, minerals, and coconut, then abundant ripe pineapple, bubble-gum, baklava, melon and runny honey. A spoonful of salty porridge and the fresh waft of cut grass. Reduction brought us salty pasta water, herbal infusions, medicated toothpaste, limoncello, beach pebbles and olive oil with chopped parsley. 37.133 – Magical Curing

58.3% ~ 1st Fill Shaved, Charred & Re-Toasted Ex-Oloroso Barrique ~ 17yo ~ Speyside

Plenty of dark fruits to start with; plums, damsons and sloes were followed by the homely scent of warm apple pie muffins with walnut glaze and poppy seeds. Plenty of spice on the palate neat, but beautifully balanced by an oaky sweetness, black cherries and dark chocolate, prunes and mincemeat as well as cinnamon swirls and a red Pineau de Charentes. 42.62 – Full Steam Ahead!

56.5% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 14yo ~ Highland

Sweet, medicinal and oily were the first comments nosing it neat followed by smoked salted almonds, barbequed pineapple, first aid kits, ash on liquorice and tarry ropes. The nose was a pool-side feast of scallops fried in butter, aged prosciutto, olives and salted cashews, followed by crème caramel and lemon tart served on wood. The palate’s alluring sweetness balanced citric astringency – rose Turkish Delight and Ruffle bars (dark chocolate, raspberry and coconut) against stewed plums, with perfumed tobacco, wasabi and waxed wood….read more

A fabulously rich nose – molasses, toffee apples and Halloween treacle scones; raisiny sherry wine, leather and polished oak conveyed pure opulence. Aromatic campfire wood-smoke arrived on the palate, with sweet sherry, brown sugar and Nutella; tannic twists of liquorice, ash, cinnamon and oak to finish. Square glass jars of strawberry bonbons and pear drops sat on a dusty old shelf with cream soda, hard toffees and raisin biscuits. Then raspberry ripple ice cream and sticky treacle arrived with intense cinnamon candies and old-school liquorice with a woody dryness that hinted at cereals and oak. The nose hinted at sweet delights (candyfloss, honey, nougat, jammy Swiss roll); we also got freshly oiled teak, Camp coffee and memories of strolling through the fruit and flower markets of Funchal. On the delicious palate – tropical fruits and floral perfumes mingled with barley sugar sweetness, pencil shavings, putty and coffee grinds. The nose is a walk in the hills – freshly Dubbin-waxed boots, grassy notes and wildflowers, with suggestions of gardenia, pineapple and tobacco leaf. The palate introduces a tropical heatwave; it’s as sharp as a pirate’s cutlass; beef jerky, chilli flakes, humbugs, vanilla and Oddfellows sweets. A lot of head-scratching from baffled panel members; crisp green apples at first followed by a gentle sweetness wrapped around toasted hazelnuts and almonds. A picture developed of a ship’s captain in his bourgeois study in the 15th century looking out to sea and wondering what lies behind the horizon. On the palate; mellow, incredibly elegant with flavours of pipe tobacco, black olive tapenade….read more

55.0% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 17yo ~ Speyside

Plenty going on here – vanilla, pepper, Acacia honey, caramel popcorn, juicy mango and pineapple as well as marzipan and chocolate shavings. Lovely texture; strawberries and cream with a touch of pepper, as well as spicy cream vanilla with cinnamon bark, clove buds and tonka beans while in the finish – a delicate floral ‘rose -like’ flavour. Waves of herbs and moss-filtered woodsmoke washed over salt-crusted driftwood amid a beach of seaweed, nuts and barbecued kippers. A big palate enveloped the senses with medicinal applewood smoke and streaky bacon while a syrupy sweetness joined prawn cocktails and hints of menthol. Mighty oak and massive smoke! Have you ever creosoted a fence on a warm summer evening while the barbeque was just about ready with a layer of white ash over a bed of glowing red coals? The scent of pomegranate and red apple fragrance oil was followed by the floral combination of roses and freesia. On the palate, we were ‘mangoed’ before other fruits like melon, pears and bananas appeared. Pour it into your glass and let the magic unfold like seeing a butterfly opening its wings – a shimmering beauty. Lovely expressive fruit aromas combined with frankincense, French polished tables and in the background the alluring scent of pure vanilla extract. Mixed dried fruits, cinder toffee, butterscotch sauce and sticky toffee pudding next to tropical banana plantations and toasted oak made this a fascinating experience on the nose. Very sweet and very woody (in a good way!) on the palate, rum and raisin, plum & lavender jam as well as candied dark cherries while in the finish an oily piney spicy punch. A typically unusual and charismatic opening for this notorious make. An initial fusion of onion seed bagels and white chocolate nibs. Then Caramac bars, herbal teas, corn starch, sugary breakfast cereals and mushroom powder. Reduction brought out savoury broths, green pepper, vanilla pods in a leather bag and malted milk. 55.65 – Zingy And Zesty Fruitiness

We were stirring a mixed berry compote into plain yoghurt and topped it with some homemade granola, maybe adding some slices of banana and a spoonful of honey. Smooth on the palate with a spicy bitter chocolate kick like tasting some of the dregs of a traditionally prepared Turkish coffee. The initial nose gave us crème caramel and maple fudge; over time, it turned nutty (almond slice, marzipan, chocolate Brazils) and fruity (toffee apple, bramble and apple crumble, spiced pears). Beautiful rich and dark aromas right from the word go; hazelnut and oregano pasta, poached prunes with rum baba and roasted cocoa nibs. On the palate very thin slices of Spanish Jamon Serrano carved off the bone with a glass of Amontillado VORS sherry – we were in nutty umami heaven! A vibrant fruity tropical aroma of mango and guava was followed by bananas in the form of a sweet creamy banoffee pie and spicy honeycomb toffee. On the palate we had fried ricotta doughnut-like cookies called Zeppole, but this time not sweet but with a spicy preserved lemon mayo perfectly matched to beer or bubbles….read more

The nose was immediately luscious and classical for this distillery. Wonderfully concentrated and ripe green and exotic fruits on display. Pineapples in syrup, soft waxes, pressed wildflowers, kiwi, hessian, lemon marmalade, butterscotch and a hint of dried mango. Superb! “This is a real precious gem” with the scent of melon balls and honey, smoked apricot jam, serrano ham, Jaffa cakes and Grand Marnier-soaked tropical fruits on top of vanilla bean ice cream. The taste neat was sublime – honey, hazelnuts, marzipan, gingerbread, citrus, almonds and brioche all in perfect harmony. A drop of water added vanilla and coconut powder….read more

The nose neat was like the treasure we could find from a pirate’s map, so many hints – but would we succeed? Aromas of Greek yogurt with honey, fresh strawberries and granola, perfumed pear, anise-scented wood and ginger tea confused us. Let’s have a sip and find the final clue – sweet, syrupy, creamy vanilla, orange essential oil, lightly nutty, a little new leather and fresh mint chocolate chip cookies in the finish….read more
