The eighth-release of cask strength 10-year-old from Glenallachie, released in November 2022, is a marriage of Pedro Ximenex and oloroso sherry puncheons, as well as a small number of virgin oak and ex-Rioja red wine casks, specially-selected by master blender Billy Walker. The result is a nose that bursts with mocha, nutmeg and walnut aromas, followed by heather honey, sweet raisins and dried berries. The palate offers notes of cinnamon, molasses, honeycomb, ginger, dark chocolate, nutmeg and fennel that linger in the finish.
Gordon & MacPhail
A 2005 Scapa single malt from independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail that was matured in a single first-fill ex-bourbon barrel for 17 years, before being bottled in August 2022 as part of its Connoisseurs Choice series. Aromas of poached pears, passion fruit, honeysuckle, green grass, lemon sherbet and toasted oak fill the nose, complemented by notes of tropical fruit, mixed nuts, dark honey, desiccated coconut, orange zest, rose water and pink pepper throughout the palate and lingering in the finish.
A limited-edition English single malt from the Lakes Whiskymaker's Editions series, Reflections was made in collaboration with Michelic-starred restaurant owner Simon Rogan. Reflecting the journey from his first restaurant, to what is now an eight-strong portfolio spanning two continents, Rogan's inspiration came from the calm beauty of the Lake District. A modern interpretation of a classic, Reflections offers notes of spiced pumpkin pie, fragrant oak, apple compote, cinnamon and vanilla that fill the palate and linger in the finish.
Enjoy all the winners of our Spirits of Year awards in one handy bundle. Competition this time around was fierce and our three winners had to beat some of the very best in their categories to take home the title. The Whisky of the Year is Ledaig 18 Year Old - a smoky, coastal single malt that was given layers of fruit and spice thanks to time spent in ex-sherry casks. The winning rum is Appleton Estate 15 Year Old Black River Casks, a fruity, nutty Jamaican rum that pays tribute to the lush valley it calls home. Gin of the Year goes to Stranger & Sons Gin, a vibrant gin from Goa, India, made with a blend of exotic local botanicals.
