Whisky, Glorious Whisky – 3rd SMWS Outturn March 2022 goes live on Friday 25th March 2022

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society release (outturn) several single cask bottlings of Scotch, Whisk(e)y, Rum and Gin, to name a few, usually on the first Friday of every month, however the SMWS have now indicated there will be a release of bottles EVERY Friday!!! Below is a full list of what the 3rd March 2022 SMWS outturn has to offer. The 3rd SMWS March 2022 outturn is released on Friday 25th March 2022.

50.0% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Port Pipes and 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrels ~ 10yo ~ Single Malt

This wonderfully ruby red small batch is a celebration of sweet complexity. We’ve drawn together selected casks of Speyside single malt, some matured full term in bourbon barrels and some additionally matured in ex-Ruby Port pipes for no less than two years. The result is rich, fruity and evocative of trips to sunnier climes. We imagined walking through a wine cellar of one of the lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia located close to the Douro river….read more


1.263 – Soft or Stiff Peaks?

58.5% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Speyside

In our mind’s eyes we saw lemon sorbet, shortbread, pineapple tarts, custard cream but the descriptor from one panellist, which certainly topped the bill for being the most imaginative, was “whipped egg whites and sugar known as ‘stiff peaks’, like the top of the newly built hotel in the St James’s centre in Edinburgh”….read more


4.297 – Film Star Hangs Out At Smokers’ Corner

54.8% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 20yo ~ Highland

Briny, mineralic pebble beach notes surfaced on the nose, then smouldering leaves and cigarette smoke on a film star’s perfumed faux fur. Eventually we found pinecones, salted nuts and sugar-coated fennel seeds. The palate had a burst of dry oak and chilli heat, followed by dark honey, tangy orange, vanilla, liquorice and figs soaked in sherry….read more


4.302 – Crumbled Nuts on Roasted Ham

61.5% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 13yo ~ Highland

Dry autumn leaves and cask char merged with roasted nuts and burnt pork crackling with rosemary and thyme before scorched salmon skin and salty sea shells delivered maritime aromas. The palate continued with honey glazed ham, lobster and prawns amid a syrupy and biscuity baseline reminiscent of toasted cereals, hazelnuts and cashews….read more


4.305 – Orcadian Sunday Roast

58.0% ~ 1st Fill Shaved, Toasted & Re-Charred Ex-Pedro Ximenez Barrique ~ 16yo ~ Highland

A rich and complex aroma that opened with charred breads, seaweed crackers, black olive tapenade, BBQ embers and bath salts. Deeply aromatic and evocative of its Orcadian origins. A little water brought out Pontefract liquorice, Jamaica ginger cake, metal polish, bouillon stock and spiced venison salami. A perfect balance of sweet, smoky, spicy and coastal….read more


4.306 – Tarred and Feathered

55.2% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 20yo ~ Highland

A vivid, pure and beautiful aroma of beach foam, pure heather flowers, crushed seashells, ink, sea air and lemon rind. Fresh, vital and wonderfully evocative. Reduction brings out soft waxes, umami pasta water, anthracite embers, gorse flowers and lanolin. Curls of fragrant, Orcadian peat smoke linger over everything….read more


5.88 – A Sprig Of Mint

58.1% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 18yo ~ Lowland

We noted at first a wonderful intense, yet delicate, citrus sweetness of lemon scones with clotted cream, followed by sliced pears and peaches and the aromatic scent of pine trees. Still feisty on the palate neat, a lemony zing like that of a well-made grapefruit and thyme gin fizz, with a corny bourbon note in the finish….read more


5.92 – A Fruity Shuffle

56.8% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 18yo ~ Lowland

Our initial impressions included aromas of pear cordial, tangerine, stone fruits and lychee syrup. Luscious, sweet and with some firmer notes of fir wood, myrtle and heather honey underneath. Water revealed hessian, wintergreen, orange cocktail bitters and a light note of demerara rum. The neat palate showed an initial burst of sweetness in the form of lemon curd….read more


5.94 – Clotted Cream On A Madarin Leaf

59.4% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 18yo ~ Lowland

Butter and thick cream coated the juicy fruits of melon, mango and strawberry while fragrant aromas of Turkish delight and vanilla merged with green grass and marzipan. The palate also was bound by fruits in syrup but now with ginger, cinnamon and brown sugar dusted over brazil nuts and toasted grains….read more


5.95 – A Ginger Lemon Shot

58.4% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 18yo ~ Lowland

A wonderful intense fruity sweetness greeted the panel on the nose neat, apple strudel, freshly squeezed orange juice with a sprinkling of ginger and pineapple chunks in light syrup. Lively and zingy on the palate like a ginger lemon shot with a pinch of ground cayenne pepper alongside the underlying sweetness of a homemade mango custard cream….read more


7.266 – Hypnotherapy

56.3% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 14yo ~ Speyside

Initially we found Fruit Loops studded throughout sweet breakfast cereals, cinnamon swirl, new leather shoes, camphor, putty, fig rolls, cut grass and a big splash of farmhouse cider. Water brought abundant freshness with impressions of petrichor, damp forest, o-zone and wet leaves….read more


7.272 – Ode to Amore

56.4% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 17yo ~ Speyside

First impression was rather shy, restraint and timid but give it a little time and you will get acquainted and soon after that ‘friend-forever’. A sensuous, serene scent of white peach, jasmine, rose, plum and spicy carnation. Silky smooth on the palate neat with peach Melba, honey and coconut basbousa…read more


7.275 – Allspice Sponge Cake

56.0% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 12yo ~ Speyside

Thick buttery notes and sweet icing coated roasted chestnuts and sponge cake with a layer of apricot jam, while cinnamon, liquorice and sultanas suggested dark rum. Flavours were a sticky combination of cloves, nutmeg and star anise blended into honey syrup with dark chocolate, coffee liqueur and leather. Adding water brought us orange oil with lemon, thyme and peppermint, cut grass and a big splash of farmhouse cider….read more


9.221 – A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts

56.2% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 13yo ~ Speyside

The panel found a richly sweet and dense nose, full of bounty bars, jelly beans, bubble gum and fruit salad juices. Coconut macaroon bars, bramble bushes, cut grass and heather flowers. Playful, elegant and cheeky! With water we found coconut cream, grape must, bailed hay, hot bakelite and plush, sweet cereals with a savoury kiss of ramen broth….read more


9.230 – Flapjacks Assemble!

57.0% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 17yo ~ Speyside

A rather peachy aroma greeted the panel, peach yoghurt, peach stones and a kiss of peach schnapps as well. Then dried apricot, toasted almonds and gorse flower. With reduction it seemed to double down on these more estery exotic and green fruit vibes, along with some warm custard and rice pudding….read more


9.232 – Teeth Marks in a Fruit Tree

57.8% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 13yo ~ Speyside

Delightful aromas of toffee apples, apricots and vanilla sponge cake morphed with orange oil, tinned pineapples and plenty of toasted oak and pencil shavings. The juicy palate arrived with a burst of gooseberries, sour apples and lemonade while milk chocolate and toffee sweetness became balanced by dry spices and firm wood tannins….read more


9.233 – Brings Everyone To The Yard

61.9% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 12yo ~ Speyside

A light and totally charming aroma full of fabrics, wool, icing sugar, pink marshmallow and candy floss greeted us at first nosing. Beyond that we also got fruit salad juices, bubble gum and various ripe exotic and green fruits. Reduction brought toasted marshmallow, chocolate stout, crème caramel and white flowers. 9.236 – Cinnamon Snickerdoodles and Sanded Pine

58.0% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 13yo ~ Speyside

Delicate, floral and easy-going, the nose whispered rumours of pecan pie, pears Belle Helene, crystallised orange, sugared almonds, honey and butterscotch – maybe hints of pipe tobacco in a laundry. The palate proved zingy and mouth-drying, with tangerines and lemon tart, hazelnuts, coffee grounds and stem ginger biscuits….read more


G10.40 – A Beguillingly Syrupy Sweet Spiced Baba

61.5% ~ 2nd Fill Toasted French Barrique ~ 16yo ~ Lowland

We mixed a cocktail called ‘Smoked Cinnamon’- a concoction of cinnamon syrup, apple juice and grain whisky served in an old-fashioned glass and garnished with a smouldering stick of cinnamon. A silky and creamy mouthfeel like a rich orange chocolate caramel sauce with a stimulating spice in the finish…read more


12.64 – Oh-So-Orange

43.4% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 31yo ~ Speyside

We all got, in one way or another, the scent of orange; orange sherbet, orange grove, confit of orange filled with orange sorbet and boozy blood orange trifle next to maple syrup, candle wax and cinnamon coconut cookies. On the palate, thick, luscious, creamy and wonderfully chewy like chocolate-covered marshmallow kisses….read more


13.91 – A Colourful Companion

60.0% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Highland

Nosing neat the colour ‘yellow-orange’ came to mind with pictures of mango flavoured Turkish delight, saffron, peeling a satsuma and lemon butter biscuits. Turning greener on the palate we were reminded of a pistachio cake with matcha green tea, green peas and kombu (Asian seaweed) and green sweet jalapeno jelly chilli sauce. 13.94 – Sunny Summer Citrus

60.6% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 8yo ~ Highland

The nose suggested various things – milk chocolate orange, ice lolly sticks and a tin of buttermilk biscuits; lemon furniture polish, spicy Chai and hints of lime pickle and ash. The palate was fruity (three fruit marmalade, mango sorbet) with woody aspects (Brazil nuts, liquorice root, nutmeg) and a drying finish of citrus, gooseberry and sloe….read more


26.196 – Comfort and Joy

59.3% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 8yo ~ Highland

A typical nose for this great make, which opened with scented beach woods, fabrics, pollens, dried wild flowers, grassy olive oil and lemon verbena. In time there were some more assertive notes of citronella waxes and cough mixtures too. With water we got more pollens, putty, furniture oils, sandalwood, camphor….read more

Our immediate impressions were of subtlety, nuance and delicate complexity. A wonderful mix of spiced coconut cake, milky chai tea, gorse flower, scented candles, beeswax and dried dandelions. Vanilla scones and extra thick Scottish double cream too. Water brought out hardwood resins, herbal liqueurs, chamomile tea, furniture polish, potting shed earthiness and rolling tobacco….read more


35.308 – Solid, Succulent and Suppable

60.7% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Speyside

We were outside in sunshine (flower meadows, fresh laundry) when a tray of treats arrived (strawberry tarts, vanilla custard slice, lemon meringue pie). The palate was intense, mouth-coating and predominantly lemony (zest, pith, juice and zing); but also with brambles, ginger biscuits, sanded oak and Cornish rum and shrub….read more


41.148 – A Merry-Go-Round of Multifarious Amusements

56.9% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Pedro Ximenez Butt ~ 14yo ~ Speyside

After eleven years in an American oak oloroso butt we moved this into a first-fill, Spanish oak PX butt. The nose is a merry-go-round of multifarious amusements – orange oil, kirsch, marzipan, vanilla and dates, with subtle susurrations of treacle, nutmeg, liquorice and dunnage warehouses….read more


50.118 – Mountaintop Experience

53.0% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 31yo ~ Lowland

Certainly unusual, maybe even disputatious. One panellist was drawn to Davy Jones’ locker – the others only imagined a wooden beach hut – with picnic baskets containing cinnamon bagels, raisin oat flapjacks, mango and chilli chocolate. The palate was ‘slightly bonkers’; fruits of the forest, sherbet straws, jasmine, Old English spangles, toasted oak and gardening gloves….read more


53.402 – You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat

58.1% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 10yo ~ Islay

This one was virtually clambering out of the glass! Immediate and massive notes of salty pasta water, industrial antiseptics, floor cleaner, germoline, herbal mouthwash and salt-baked white fish. Kelp, petrol, old creel nets and freshly poured tar. Whoever said this was a ‘medium style’ Islay?….read more


80.35 – Ankle Biter

59.1% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 9yo ~ Speyside

An unusually robust nose greeted the panel. Lots of hot toast, wood embers, fabrics, boiled lime sweets and putty. More lively that we are used to from this normally conformist distillery. Water brought peach stones, soda bread, chamomile, elderflower cordial and dried flowers in vase water….read more


113.59 – Ode to a Barrel

59.9% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 11yo ~ Speyside

The neat nose suggested to us lemon lozenges, runny honey and the spicy warmth of cask char. Robust and giving the impression of being densely textured. With water we found it became more floral and soft, with fruity pink peppercorns, vanilla cream soda and marshmallow….read more


134.10 – Sooty Sausages

58.7% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 5yo ~ Goa, India

Sweet applewood smoke encased a menagerie of shellfish, apple slices and marshmallows while toasted pine nuts and roasted chestnuts joined salted caramel with rum and raisin ice cream. Clean smoke continued onto the palate with a large dose of toffee, dark treacle and molasses merging with coal dust, kippers and pineapple chunks….read more
