3rd SMWS Outturn March 2022

Whisky, Glorious Whisky – 3rd SMWS Outturn March 2022 goes live on Friday 25th March 2022

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society release (outturn) several single cask bottlings of Scotch, Whisk(e)y, Rum and Gin, to name a few, usually on the first Friday of every month, however the SMWS have now indicated there will be a release of bottles EVERY Friday!!! Below is a full list of what the 3rd March 2022 SMWS outturn has to offer. The 3rd SMWS March 2022 outturn is released on Friday 25th March 2022.

This wonderfully ruby red small batch is a celebration of sweet complexity. We’ve drawn together selected casks of Speyside single malt, some matured full term in bourbon barrels and some additionally matured in ex-Ruby Port pipes for no less than two years. 1.263 – Soft or Stiff Peaks?

In our mind’s eyes we saw lemon sorbet, shortbread, pineapple tarts, custard cream but the descriptor from one panellist, which certainly topped the bill for being the most imaginative, was “whipped egg whites and sugar known as ‘stiff peaks’, like the top of the newly built hotel in the St James’s centre in Edinburgh”….read more

4.297 – Film Star Hangs Out At Smokers’ Corner

Briny, mineralic pebble beach notes surfaced on the nose, then smouldering leaves and cigarette smoke on a film star’s perfumed faux fur. Eventually we found pinecones, salted nuts and sugar-coated fennel seeds. The palate had a burst of dry oak and chilli heat, followed by dark honey, tangy orange, vanilla, liquorice and figs soaked in sherry….read more

4.302 – Crumbled Nuts on Roasted Ham

Dry autumn leaves and cask char merged with roasted nuts and burnt pork crackling with rosemary and thyme before scorched salmon skin and salty sea shells delivered maritime aromas. The palate continued with honey glazed ham, lobster and prawns amid a syrupy and biscuity baseline reminiscent of toasted cereals, hazelnuts and cashews….read more

A rich and complex aroma that opened with charred breads, seaweed crackers, black olive tapenade, BBQ embers and bath salts. Deeply aromatic and evocative of its Orcadian origins. We noted at first a wonderful intense, yet delicate, citrus sweetness of lemon scones with clotted cream, followed by sliced pears and peaches and the aromatic scent of pine trees. Still feisty on the palate neat, a lemony zing like that of a well-made grapefruit and thyme gin fizz, with a corny bourbon note in the finish….read more

Our initial impressions included aromas of pear cordial, tangerine, stone fruits and lychee syrup. Luscious, sweet and with some firmer notes of fir wood, myrtle and heather honey underneath. Water revealed hessian, wintergreen, orange cocktail bitters and a light note of demerara rum. The neat palate showed an initial burst of sweetness in the form of lemon curd….read more

Butter and thick cream coated the juicy fruits of melon, mango and strawberry while fragrant aromas of Turkish delight and vanilla merged with green grass and marzipan. A wonderful intense fruity sweetness greeted the panel on the nose neat, apple strudel, freshly squeezed orange juice with a sprinkling of ginger and pineapple chunks in light syrup. Thick buttery notes and sweet icing coated roasted chestnuts and sponge cake with a layer of apricot jam, while cinnamon, liquorice and sultanas suggested dark rum. Flavours were a sticky combination of cloves, nutmeg and star anise blended into honey syrup with dark chocolate, coffee liqueur and leather. A rather peachy aroma greeted the panel, peach yoghurt, peach stones and a kiss of peach schnapps as well. Then dried apricot, toasted almonds and gorse flower. Delightful aromas of toffee apples, apricots and vanilla sponge cake morphed with orange oil, tinned pineapples and plenty of toasted oak and pencil shavings.
