What do the Scotch Malt Whisky Society SMWS codes mean?

There are two numbers separated by a dot on the label. The first number is the distillery number, which is allocated in order of when the first cask of the distillery is bottled and the number after the dot refers to the cask number.

Example… So, an SMWS single cask bottling of 27.6, is a bottle of Scotch Single Malt Whisky from a cask of Springbank from the 6th cask bottled from the Springbank distillery, number 27 is allocated to the Springbank Distillery. See the list below.

Why does the SMWS not detail the whisky’s name in the bottle?

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society SMWS is interested in the unique and individual flavours and characteristics of Single Malt Whisky rather than the brands and distilleries behind them. The reason this independent bottler doesn’t identify the distillery is simply that the single cask, cask strength version of the whisky will probably not taste anything like what you’d expect.

That’s the nature of single cask whisky, each cask is unique and individual and The Scotch Malt Whisky Society also hopes to encourage its members to try a whisky they have never tasted.

For reference only, below is The Whisky Boys’ own SMWS distillery codes list:

  6. Keith McBride says:

    Danny,

Send it to me and I’ll taste it and let you know if it’s worth keeping!! 😉

Do you have the bottling number as well? It will be a 57.xx. The Society may have kept the tasting notes if you ask them.

I suspect, as the distillery is no longer producing, that there will be a market for it, if you want to sell.Google it.

  7. Nicola Young says:
