113.62 – A Greek ‘Spoon Sweet’
57.3% ~ 1st Fill #3 Char Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Speyside ~ £48.40
In our mind’s eyes we saw lemon sorbet, shortbread, pineapple tarts, custard cream but the descriptor from one panellist, The aroma was that of coconut lemon drizzle cake, damson muffins and Greek rose petal compote known as ‘spoon sweet’ served on a spoon as a gesture of hospitality. On the palate we went from Greece to Louisiana as we enjoyed a bananas Foster, a dessert made with bananas, vanilla ice cream and a sauce out of butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, dark rum and banana liqueur. Water release ester heaven with candied pineapples and papayas… read more
19.71 – Mad Wax: Fruity Load!
54.4% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 18yo ~ Highland ~ £100.80
The neat nose brimmed with a juicy, exotic waxiness. Old school and immediately seductive with bags of overripe green and garden fruits on display. We also noted exotic fruit teas, wood resins, dried mango and lemon verbena. Gorgeous! With water it opened to reveal lemon cough drops, hessian, coal dust, metal polish, camphor, chalk and dried wild flowers. A truly aromatic highland style dram… read more
66.219 – A Dram Of Considerable Heft
59.7% ~ 1st Ex-Px Hogshead ~ 14yo ~ Highland ~ £83.80
After 12 years in ex-bourbon wood we transferred this into a first-fill American oak PX hogshead. The nose picks up cereals (Cheerios, Weetos), toasted oak and astringent notes of balsamic, white port, cranberry sauce and lemon marmalade. Similarly, the palate gets malt loaf, strawberry tarts and other red fruits; but now a savoury hit arrives (beef jerky, meaty gravy); then black pepper, black tea and bouquet garni to finish… read more
4.311 – Tiptoe Through The Heather
61.1% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 13yo ~ Highland ~ £68.00
The initial nose suggested creamy vanilla infused with light but assertive peat smoke. This then evolved towards heather and lavender smouldering to ashes. At the back we noted eucalyptus and marshmallows melting over peat embers. Water made it oilier and brought notes of linseed, heather flowers, beers, marmite and distant kelp. The neat palate displayed a wonderfully playful peatiness with leather, liquorice and some raw ginger heat… read more
78.56 – Complex And Multi-Faceted
63.2% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 12yo ~ Highland ~ £62.00
Tramping over heathery hillsides near the sea, we sheltered in an old school house where we had coffees, teas and cakes. The palate’s intense dark sweetness cheered us further (muscovado, treacle toffee, deep golden honey), then a slightly medicinal finish (Victory V’s, snuff). The reduced nose split the panel – one of us had cornflakes with banana, one had roast wild boar with red wine jus, while another enjoyed fruity sweets in a rally car… read more
