SMWS Outturn October 2020

SMWS Outturn October 2020 is now live.

Let’s Get Fizzical! – The Scotch Malt Whisky Society release (outturn) several single cask bottlings of Scotch, Whisk(e)y, Rum and Gin, to name a few, on the first Friday of every month. Below is a full list of what the SMWS Let’s Get Fizzical! outturn released on the 2nd October 2020 has to offer.

The SMWS October 2020 outturn has 15 Scotch whiskies, 1 Irish whiskey, 1 grain whisky and 1 rum to choose from. These whiskies includes a 28 year old Glen Ord a 29 year old Balblair and much, much more… These unique monthly bottlings are only available to buy by members of the Society. (Don’t worry you can join the SMWS here) but be quick several of the bottlings sell out as quickly as the day they are released.

4.258 – Make Mine a Magnum!

56.9% ~ 1st Fill Barrique ~ 15yo ~ Highland

55.3% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Oloroso Sherry Hogshead ~ 23yo ~ Speyside

A dense, leathery and resinous style of sherried whisky. We immediately found lots of anthracite, bacon jam, raspberry coulis and chocolate-covered pecans and Brazil nuts. The Panel found an immediately bright and playful nose. Full of green jellied fruits, canvas, herbal syrups, freshly baled hay, earthy potting sheds, sweet pollens and agave syrup. We were served a nice and cool apple wine with lemonade (‘süss gespritzt’) out of the traditional earthenware jug called ‘Bembel’ while sitting in the heart of the old town square in Frankfurt. Rich, golden honey trickled from honeycomb onto bruised apples and pears that lay scattered beneath. The nose opened with a wonderfully fat, syrupy waxiness. Pure, old-school Highland-style malt whisky. Surprisingly hefty for this make, was the Panel’s initial impression. Things like chamois leather, new shoes, canvas, steel wool, lanolin, hessian, old oak, rum and raisin and menthol cigarettes were all detected. The sweet reek of applewood smoked kippers filled the air as a chimney sweep’s broom flicked a puff of soot that settled onto fresh muscles and scorched oak. An interesting nose – eucalyptus honey, flapjacks, syrup sponge, Madeira wine, truffle oil mixed with balsamic and shoe polish in a tin. A gentle start delivered sweet perfume and candyfloss with clean wood and dry straw. Juicy fruits combined pineapple chunks with pears, peaches and strawberries against a backdrop of vanilla and sawdust. This smells like Santa’s house on Boxing Day – soot-covered clothing and boots on the floor while Santa relaxes in a Friars’ Balsam bath. The nose was immediately appealing, with creamy vanilla, melted butter and bananas. It was heady, sweet and malty with perhaps the slightest suggestion of woodsmoke and char. We inhaled the freshness of spearmint and clean macramé woven wool.
