Firework Flavours For New Year – The Scotch Malt Whisky Society release (outturn) several single cask bottlings of Scotch, Whisk(e)y, Rum and Gin, to name a few, usually on the first Friday of every month. 57.4% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Guyanese Rum Barrel ~ 17yo ~ Islay

We paddled a day on the Demerara which cuts a silvery path across the lush green landscape as we sat by the riverside in late evening placing clumps of heather (we brought them with us) on the embers of the campfire. 4.295 – Andalucian Orcadian

54.4% ~ 1st Fill Shaved, Charred & Re-Toasted Ex-PX Barrique ~ 18yo ~ Highland

After sixteen years in a bourbon hogshead we shifted this into a first-fill PX barrique. The nose had hints of heather moor burn, figs and rum-soaked raisins, honey on toast and scallops served with maple cured bacon. 58.4% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 18yo ~ Lowland

A wonderful intense fruity sweetness greeted the panel on the nose neat, apple strudel, freshly squeezed orange juice with a sprinkling of ginger and pineapple chunks in light syrup. 9.233 – Brings Everyone To The Yard

61.9% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 12yo ~ Speyside

A light and totally charming aroma full of fabrics, wool, icing sugar, pink marshmallow and candy floss greeted us at first nosing. Beyond that we also got fruit salad juices, bubble gum and various ripe exotic and green fruits. Reduction brought toasted marshmallow, chocolate stout, crème caramel and white flowers….read more


13.91 – A Colourful Companion

60.0% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 10yo ~ Highland

Nosing neat the colour ‘yellow-orange’ came to mind with pictures of mango flavoured Turkish delight, saffron, peeling a satsuma and lemon butter biscuits. Turning greener on the palate we were reminded of a pistachio cake with matcha green tea, green peas and kombu (Asian seaweed) and green sweet jalapeno jelly chilli sauce….read more


29.286 – Chateau Du Peatreek

55.3% ~ 1st Fill Shaved, Toasted & Recharred Ex-Oloroso Barrique ~ 23yo ~ Islay

The initial nose was sweet, complex and subtle exotic. Unfolding notes of natural tar extract, iodine drops, TCP and warm Bakelite. Then bigger aromas of black pepper, smoked olive oils, leather peat, brine and pickled black olives all emerged. The start wholeheartedly embraced fragrant perfume and apple blossom before sweet cereals, toasted oak and pencil shavings paved the way for ripe banana, peaches and butter icing. Sweetness was abundant from the first sip with dessert apples, mango, melon and pineapple mixing with caramel popcorn….read more

55.9% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 12yo ~ Speyside

A rich and satisfying aroma that displayed notes of raw barley along with vegemite on brown toast, hot pine resin, toasted nuts, clean cereals and a generous slice of vanilla sponge cake. Water offered a grassier edge with condensed milk and a scatter of sherbet lemons in there too for good measure….read more


78.55 – Slow Sapid Surrender

59.4% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 8yo ~ Highland

We encountered a curious nose, full of cherries and chocolate, liquorice and lemon, peanuts, pistachios and wasabi peas. The palate was sweet and intensely flavoured – buttery Danish biscuits, toffee, crème brulée and cinnamon toast, then a warming, mouth-drying finish of ginger, chilli, over-done plum pie and oak…read more

60.0% ~ 1st Fill Toasted High Lactone American Oak Barrique ~ 10yo ~ Speyside

We were ‘making hay while the sun shines’ and being thirsty work, we had plenty of cloudy cider and heather ales to keep us going. A lovely combination of sweet, floral and malty flavours on the palate neat with coconut cookies as well as buttered toast and a hint of a spicy herbal finish….read more

Classic refill wood profile we thought. Straight away we noted charming aromas of canvass satchel, pencil cases, bergamot, lanolin and plain buttered toast. Water brought out pressed flowers, samphire, young calvados and sandalwood with a kiss of pear cider….read more
