G15.15 – The Peat Frontier

62.6% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 8yo ~ Highland

What is this? Window cleaner with dried sage, bubblegum, antiseptic and TCP-soaked bandages? It can only be the produce of the world’s most convoluted and bonkers still room. Reduction brought out engine oil, smoked fennel, malt vinegar crisps and fresh citrus fruits charred with a blowtorch…read more

3.339 – So Wonderfully Close, Yet So Wonderfully Far!

57.1% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 17yo ~ Islay

We imagined walking upstairs to the bar of this distillery overlooking Lochindaal and the exotic, fruity, sweet and slightly smoky scent gave us the impression of being somewhere in the Caribbean. Aptly they had on the drink’s menu a pear juice mojito, but of course instead of vodka using the ‘house-dram’ – very moreish and mouth-watering which we enjoyed sitting on the balcony…read more

24.166 – All Three Courses At Once

62.9% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 13yo ~ Speyside

A big, uncompromising and direct aroma full of gingerbread, umami paste, bouillon stock and marrowfat peas in butter greeted us. Then things like Guinness foam, saffron, olive oil and mothballs were all noted. With water we got marmalade on pretzels, chopped hazelnuts, tamarind, lemon barley water and camphor. The palate confirmed this to be a BIG whisky, with more gingerbread, sage stuffing….read more

30.121 – Worth Hunting Down

67.4% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 8yo ~ Speyside

We found ourselves transported into an Austrian tea house or, even better, into a hunting lodge with the smell of taxidermy mounts hanging on the wall mixed with chocolatey and luscious apricot jam aromas from a Viennese Sacher Torte. Wow, on the palate we had a steaming hot mug of Jagertee (hunter’s tea)….read more

35.311 – Lighting Up An Expensive Cigar

62.7% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 13yo ~ Speyside

The rather dry nose evoked hessian sacks and cigar boxes, nutmeg, ginger, and charred wood; also, currants, chardonnay, and butterscotch sweets. The palate offered golden raisins, orange peel and stewed red fruits, chocolate, and caramel – with a finish of white pepper, Fernet Branca and struck match….read more

Galangal and North African spices then merged with figs, dates and rum fudge while toasted almonds joined puffed breakfast cereals. The palate was rich and weighty with raisins and heavily oaked spicy red wine. Raisins were served with sticky toffee pudding as honey returned alongside spiced red cabbage…read more

41.146 – Carved And Crafted

59.5% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Oloroso Hogshead ~ 15yo ~ Speyside

We imagined a wood carver unrolling a leather pouch with all the tools ready to start a new project. On the palate there was plenty of fragrant wood flavours combined with autumn harvest baked apples with raisins, walnuts and cinnamon. After the addition of water, the scent of freshly baked rye bread combined with conkers and conifer cones made for a sweetish, herbaceous bouquet…read more

44.150 – Salting And Pickling

59.5% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 16yo ~ Speyside

Nosing this neat, a variety of pictures came to our minds including boysenberry and almond granola clusters, rum and raisin fudge, bramble mille-feuille and pomegranate molasses. On tasting, one panellist was reminded of eating smoked burrata with beetroot and pickled greengages, while others were thinking of over-ripe red apples, pine sap and ice-cream wafers..read more

53.403 – Grubby, Dark And Sinister

57.1% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 11yo ~ Islay

An enticingly coastal start welcomed us with rock pools, beach bonfire ash and salty sea air before heavier aromas of tarry ropes, liquorice cough syrup and blackened engine grease arrived. The palate was chewy and sticky with burnt toffee, sweet icing and manuka honey while roasted peanuts and cereals rattled in a coal scuttle. Adding water released thick plumes of industrial smoke…read more

54.2% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 19yo ~ Speyside

A freshly baked soft, fluffy and slightly sweet slice of braided yeast bread (Hefezopf or challah) topped with sugar crystals and sliced nuts spread with butter – a light and tasty treat! 68.75 – Alluring And Distinctive, Soft And Sensuous

53.9% ~ 2nd Fill Charred Ex-Red Wine Barrique ~ 15yo ~ Highland

After twelve years in ex-bourbon wood we transferred this into a charred second-fill red wine barrique. The nose evoked a French village square in autumn – red grape pressings, foie gras on toast, perfumed silk scarves, smouldering leaves, cured meats and hints of pipe tobacco. The soft, sensuous palate combined honey-drizzled figs, stewed apples and poached pears…read more

70.45 – Flambeed In Rum

56.2% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 13yo ~ Highland

A nose full of ripe bananas and pears carried us towards salted caramel and treacle with a little side hustle of heavy cask char and almond oil. A moderate inferno on the tongue softened to cinnamon and ginger with sweet syrup and a curious amalgamation of tobacco leaves, cocoa nibs and bitter orange oil. More fragrant with water we now found rose petals and vanilla rubbing shoulders…read more

138.12 – Spice Wreck

57.1% ~ 1st Fill #3 Char Barrel ~ 6yo ~ Taiwan

The cask had the upper hand here initially we thought. It opened with notes of smoked pencil shavings, graphite oil and natural tar. Then herbal-scented embrocations, bacon frazzles and extra salty pork scratchings. Wee leathery and camphory touches emerged over time. Water brought out frying pancetta, charcoal embers, chamois leather, TCP and smoked mint…read more
