SMWS Outturn December 2021 goes live on Friday 3rd December 2021

Dapper Drams and Glitzy Gifts – The Scotch Malt Whisky Society release (outturn) several single cask bottlings of Scotch, Whisk(e)y, Rum and Gin, to name a few, usually on the first Friday of every month. Below is a full list of what the SMWS Dapper Drams and Glitzy Gifts December 2021 outturn has to offer. The SMWS December 2021 outturn is released on Friday 3rd Decenmber 2021.

A lively and ‘full of fun’ aroma excited the panel, fruit flavoured love hearts, wine gums, fluffy honey sweetened marshmallows as well as passion fruit and banana Eton mess. Cuts like a knife on the palate at first with a gingery, peppery heat before a cooling Limoncello spritz cocktail (Limoncello, Prosecco and soda) came to the rescue….read more


68.64 – A Dash of Youthful Élan

The nose gave us Swiss roll, Victoria sponge, cereal and biscuit notes, eventually turning to mandarin cheesecake, banana chips and jelly babies. The palate had sweet, tart lemon drizzle cake and key lime pie; its youthful élan of Buck’s Fizz…read more


113.53 – A Bit of a Bibelot

Our noses encountered caramel, foamy shrimps and bananas, Crunchie bars and marmalade, combined with toasted coconut, cinnamon stick and carpentry workshops. On tasting it, we got salted caramel in dark chocolate, iced cinnamon buns and orange liqueurs; then warmer flavours of ginger snaps, pepper, leather, wood and wasabi…read more

We all looked at each other, are you getting the same as me? Yes, smoke! Roasted Tonka beans with the aromatic scent of burnt vanilla and bitter almonds. A fragrant smoke on the palate neat – could it be that the valley of the green grass….read more

Complex and intriguing, the nose combined pink wafers and bourbon biscuits with fresh figs on wooden platters, shredded wheat, leather, tobacco, terracotta, gun cabinets and menthol and eucalyptus sweets….read more


4.305 – Orcadian Sunday Roast

58.0% ~ 1st Fill Shaved, Toasted and Recharred Ex-PX Barrique ~ 16yo ~ Highland

A rich and complex aroma that opened with charred breads, seaweed crackers, black olive tapenade, BBQ embers and bath salts. Deeply aromatic and evocative of its Orcadian origins. A little water brought out Pontefract liquorice, Jamaica ginger cake….read more


5.92 – A Fruity Shuffle

56.8% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 18yo ~ Lowland

Our initial impressions included aromas of pear cordial, tangerine, stone fruits and lychee syrup. Luscious, sweet and with some firmer notes of fir wood, myrtle and heather honey underneath. Water revealed hessian, wintergreen, orange cocktail bitters….read more


6.55 – Sugar and Spice

A juicy and sweet initial aroma that included apple sours, lemon sherbet, flying saucer sweeties and rhubarb and custard. In time this evolved towards ripe green apples, pineapple juice, modelling glue and baked banana….read more

Clear and vivid initial aromas included lemon curd, lanolin, tea tree oil, bergamot, orange tea, cocktail bitters, star fruit, lime zest and marzipan. Big, easy and generously fruity as weve come to expect from this cult distillery…read more

We imagined collecting our own strawberries in a wicker basket on a warm sunny July day surrounded by fields of barley. Picking strawberries made us hungry and we unpacked our cream tea hamper to enjoy plain and fruit scones, clotted cream….read more


12.66 – Into The Shed

58.8% ~ 2nd Fill Charred Ex-Red Wine Barrique ~ 12yo ~ Speyside

The initial nose suggested to us chocolate sponge cake, nutmeg, coffee grounds and the earthy tang of an old potting shed. Beyond that we noted balsamic reduction, fig and brooding dark ales. Water revealed a deeper, more herbal side with dried sage….read more


19.61 – Facets and Layers

59.0% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 18yo ~ Highland

A big, bold, no nonsense highland style malt; this much was immediately apparent from the nose. Notes of hobnobs and digestive biscuits, then caramelised oatmeal, scones loaded with clotted cream, honeysuckle, melon and allspice….read more


39.228 – Fiery But Flavoursome

54.4% ~ 2nd Fill Toasted French Oak Barrique ~ 10yo ~ Speyside

After eight years in the embrace of a bourbon hoggie, we introduced this to a second-fill toasted French oak barrique. The nose wafted rather subtle notes of jasmine tea, honey, daffodils, Battenberg cake and perfumed leather gloves….read more

58.8% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 14yo ~ Highland

Immediately upon nosing we knew we were entering heavily peated territory. Huge notes of smoked vinegar, a sense of mainlining the stuff they put on salt & vinegar Discos. Pickled anchovies, seawater, fermenting lime juice, kiln air, aniseed….read more

The nose wafts butterscotch, caramel wafers, cinder toffee, chocolate Angel Delight and maple syrup; coffee grounds and shaved hardwoods stand shyly behind. The palate is also sweet – caramel log, Victoria cream sponge, chocolate-coated Turkish delight….read more

59.4% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 10yo ~ Islay

Sweet roasted nuts and toasted oats merged with waxy orange skin and salted limes before maritime aromas floated to the surface to bring dry seaweed, shellfish and chimney soot in a rock pool. Toasted biscuit flavours transferred over to the palate to be joined by fresh herbs….read more


63.89 – A Ticking Fruit Bomb

At first we got the impression wed just prized open a tin of old school custard powder with this impression of dusty sweetness. We also noted kumquat, peaches and condensed milk. Water brought out toasted coconut, orange oils, citrus curds and banana daiquiri….read more

55.5% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Speyside

A lovely initial aroma, full of sweet glucose and impressions of salted honey. Caramel notes also emerged along with more aromatic subtleties such as gorse, cactus, soda bread and lamp oil. Some pineapple chunks mushed into sourdough bread….read more


73.128 – Flowers Crushed by a Falling Oak Tree

Our introduction was adorned with honeysuckle, pot pourri and apple blossom, the sweet fragrance from which blended with toffee apples, green herbs and lemon sponge cake topped with milk chocolate. A big burst of chilli on the palate softened to juicy lemons….read more


78.52 – Jolly Nice Fruit and Spice

59.1% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 8yo ~ Highland

‘A joy to sniff!’ – chocolate orange and candied lemons, syrup sponge, spun sugar and frangipane, rum and raisin, pencil shavings and tea chests. The palate had intense sweetness and wood – cherry Bakewell, almond slice and iced walnut loaf….read more


80.28 – Bootleg Saloon Breakfast

57.2% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 9yo ~ Speyside

The first whiff was maple syrup on porridge and oaty flapjacks, green apple and caramel, then leather, tobacco and sawdust on a bootleg saloon floor. The palate was sweet and tart – cloudy lemonade, rhubarb crumble and toffee apple; the finish finding nutmeg….read more


93.172 – Pyroclastic Flow

58.9% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 8yo ~ Campbeltown

The panel initially mused about whether this was the aroma of a fire being extinguished with malt vinegar. They also recorded notes that included lobsters charring on a peat fire, smoked Austrian cheese and root beer mixed with antiseptic….read more


94.20 – Rose Mead

56.2% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 12yo ~ Highland

The initial aroma was that of crunchy nutty cornflakes, traditional Yorkshire parkin and dried papaya before sweeter floral honey notes as well as pineapple with lime and vanilla syrup appeared. On the palate dolmades – Greek stuffed vine leaves with an almond yoghurt….read more

57.9% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Oloroso Sherry Hogshead ~ 11yo ~ Speyside

Someone was making fudge in a hot kitchen. There was also orange toffee bonbons, ripe kumquat, dried flowers and cantaloupe melon. Beyond that the panel also noted the fizz of Lambrusco, black pepper and a saline tang of oloroso….read more


122.43 – Conjuring Up All Sorts Of Images

61.9% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Highland

The aroma grabbed a hidden corner of our imagination with smoked gooseberry fool, green apples rubbed with Germolene antiseptic cream, peated pickled sushi ginger and navy style rum. The taste was no different with smoked mackerel and ginger Japanese pilaf….read more


G5.15 – Age With Grace

57.9% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-White Wine Barrique ~ 33yo ~ Highland

Our first impressions were of a youthful and vigorous dessert wine with elegant oak spiced laced throughout. Further impressions were of custard pudding infused with old Tokaji, bananas baked in salted carmel, candied hazelnuts, citrus peels, runny honey and heather flowers….read more

We were greeted by the gentle hint of wood smoke as we prepared a morel sauce with yellow wine (sauce au vin jaune et morilles) which so perfectly accompanies venison. On the palate oat and black pepper biscuits, soft and zingy lemon cookies….read more


3.338 – Smoky ‘Spice of the Angels’

We imagined sitting on a newly varnished wooden bench in a blooming rose garden overlooking a lake and smoking our own rolled peaches and mango flavoured tobacco cigarettes. A great texture with the sizzling smoky sweetness of peated ‘love hearts’….read more

A funny nose that invoked smoked limes, hoppy ales, yeast extract and rain on gravel. We also noted smoked coconut milk, sooty bananas, damp hay and TCP with mineral oil. Water brought suggestions of smoked mackerel, chalky limestone…read more

The panel had all sorts of images in mind nosing this one neat. Worn for the first time but now muddy welly boots, a gooseberry tart, bacon wrapped asparagus, exotic wood and pine syrup…read more
