Halloween Daring Drams – The Scotch Malt Whisky Society release (outturn) several single cask bottlings of Scotch, Whisk(e)y, Rum and Gin, to name a few, usually on the first Friday of every month. 94.32 – Sunshine On A Wedding Breakfast
56.3% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 13yo ~ Highland ~ £72.60
On this nose, cereals and fruit were joined in holy matrimony – Birchermuesli with spiced plums and barbecued banana sprinkled with brown sugar, cinnamon and toasted almond flakes – as clean as sunshine on golden barley. On the palate, stewed forest fruits with honey, whipped cream and meringue gave way eventually to the lasting warmth of ginger, nutmeg, spiced walnuts and chewed pencil ends. The reduced nose offered lightly toasted breakfast cereal with freeze-dried strawberries and raspberries, and tutti frutti ice cream with wafers. 46.126 – Sweeties In The Forest
55.4% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 12yo ~ Speyside ~ £57.10
A light and bubbly initial aroma that included candy floss and rose water up front, then strawberry mille fuille, barley sugar, tree bark and a hint of Turkish delight. Reduction brought out an intensely floral profile: lots of wild roses, vase water and forest flowers. Then wee surprise hints of mint cake and new leather. The neat palate displayed soft minty notes, pink wafer biscuit, boiled citrus sweets and notes of guava drizzled with flower honey. 53.424 – A Bloody Hell Mary
60.7% ~ Refill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 10yo ~ Islay ~ £66.30
Amidst the clear earth and falling autumn leaves we found flashes of green as olive oil and lime zest led us towards margarita cocktails topped with wood ash. The palate was like a smoky bloody mary with tomato vines, chilli sauce and singed heather swirling deeper into rosemary, thyme and waxy textures merging with sticky honey. 1.267 – From Bright Dawn To Dry Dusk
58.5% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 10yo ~ Speyside ~ £61.20
The nose opened with Neapolitan ice-cream, marshmallows and vanilla custard, but a citric surge gradually caught up (lemon pulp, lime leaf, lemon barley water). The palate’s sweet treats were tempered by teasing bitterness – lemon drizzle cake, sugared almonds and burnt toffee; the finish picked up tobacco leaf, tree bark and cinnamon. The reduced nose caught a moment by the pool with sauvignon blanc and lemon-flavoured dark chocolate served on sun-warmed oak.
