78.60 – A Crofter’s Breakfast

59.6% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 9yo ~ Highland ~ £54.00

The nose gave us a hessian sack full of cloves, Werther’s Original caramel candies and sherry spilled on wood; finding tobacco leaf and tinned spinach we started singing ‘Popeye the sailor man’. The palate was ‘break time’ with black coffee, cinnamon buns, jam tarts and bourbon biscuits; then a dry finish of chewing wood, menthol and balsamic – powerful stuff. The reduced nose was a crofter’s breakfast – treacle scones, black bun, Weetabix and iced gingerbread… read more

44.153 – Curiously Crazy!

59.6% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Px Hogshead ~ 14yo ~ Highland ~ £76.20

Nosing neat, memories came flooding back of ginger nut biscuits, black bun and yet another Scottish fruit cake, the Selkirk Bannock, alongside rum baba and blackstrap molasses. We reached for the water but could still feel the heat, habanero spiced Spanish style rum, lightly smoked olive oil and coal tar… read more

26.196 – Comfort and Joy

59.3% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Highland ~ £57.50

35.279 – Greeted With A Big Smile And Open Arms

60.2% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 17yo ~ Speyside ~ £84.20

It was like being welcomed with a big smile and open arms – honey, melon, pineapple and vanilla next to warm cinnamon swirls and a whiff of fruit jam hookah tobacco. On the palate luscious mango arrived first soon followed by honey candied chilli ginger, salted toffee, fresh oak and in the finish dark bittersweet chocolate. With the addition of water banana chips, coconut flakes and apricot jam were revealed as we uncorked a very old wine bottle just brought up from the cellar. Still detecting a dryness, but now with plenty of pleasing fruity sweetness, like that of Cantaloupe sorbet, mango slices and hazelnut crème caramel… read more
