2nd SMWS Outturn March 2022 goes live on Friday 18th March 2022

New Lucky Green Gems – The Scotch Malt Whisky Society release (outturn) several single cask bottlings of Scotch, Whisk(e)y, Rum and Gin, to name a few, usually on the first Friday of every month, however the SMWS have now indicated there will be a release of bottles EVERY Friday!!! Below is a full list of what the SMWS New Lucky Green Gems outturn has to offer. The 2nd SMWS March 2022 outturn is released on Friday 18th March 2022.

62.6% ~ New Charred Oak Quarter Cask ~ 4yo ~ Chicago

The nose was sweet and punchy – spun sugar, salt-water taffy with raisins, caramelized pineapple and oiled wood in the sunshine. The neat palate was powerful and intense – cherry Tunes, concentrated fruit bars, liquorice root and linseeds on salted porridge; a mouth-drying finish….read more

67.4% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 15yo ~ Nicaragua

An immediate nose of caramelised brown sugar on freshly baked soda bread kicked things off. Lots of mineral oil, furniture polish, rosewater, bicycle inner tube, sweet children’s cough medicines and natural tar extract. 56.4% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 17yo ~ Speyside

First impression was rather shy, restraint and timid but give it a little time and you will get acquainted and soon after that ‘friend-forever’. 62.0% ~ Re-Charred Hogshead ~ 11yo ~ Highland

58.5% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Highland

First impressions included pine needles, barbour jackets, furniture wax and putty. Some crisper notes of green apple and underripe gooseberry – very ‘highland’ in style. With water we got sandalwood, toasted sunflower seeds, cooling oils and a light, umami salinity, like pasta water….read more


35.298 – Big Bumber Bag of Buttons

60.7% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 7yo ~ Speyside

On the nose neat we immediately had images of peaches poached in bourbon, Battenberg cake, marzipan as well as chocolate and hazelnut stollen. We then took a sip and managed to taste them all next to Swiss rolls, strawberry jam, white chocolate crème brûlée and a cardamom tonka bean cheesecake with caramelised pears….read more

63.7% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 12yo ~ Speyside

On the nose, we got a cream soda ice-cream float, toffee apples and Madeira sponge, cherry pieces in dark chocolate, tea chests, cigar boxes, old wooden desks and leather books. The initial palate delivered panna cotta and golden syrup, white pepper, ginger and liquorice – evolving into tart confectionery like cherry lips, sour apple chews and sherbet lemons….read more

55.1% ~ 1st Fill Charred Ex-Red Wine Barrique ~ 22yo ~ Speyside

A nose to make you sit up and take notice. Notes of sweet Lambrusco, cream sherry, soft peaches and ripe plums were all noted. In addition we found blackcurrant and bramble liqueurs, fig parfait, caramel shortbread, cinnamon and cloves. 48.134 – Secret Snacks in the Wardrobe

61.1% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 17yo ~ Speyside

With time and patience the nose discovers blackberry pie with nutmeg and cinnamon-sprinkled custard, chocolate-dipped candied orange, brandy snaps and old red roses lying on polished wood. The palate has marrons glacés, coffee creams and marzipan lebkuchen; then the finish warms up with crystallized ginger, hints of wood, whispers of leather and wasabi tingles…read more

66.3% ~ 1st Fill Spanish Oak Ex-Oloroso Butt ~ 9yo ~ Speyside

The initial nose was enticingly lean, clean and spicy! Abundant notes of warm rye bread with dark fruit chutneys, tamarind, blood orange marmalade and tangerine peel. Also game meats, lanolin and freshly brewed espresso. Water brought wet leaves, mossy freshness and petrichor. Hints of Baileys in hot cocoa, old leather, caraway and toasted walnuts…read more

59.8% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 12yo ~ Highland

The nose was typical of this make and suggested oily sheep wool infused with sea kelp. Then smouldering dried herbs, pickled black olives and smoky porridge. Some water brought medical vapour rubs, marjoram and smoked limoncello with poster paints. The palate opened with natural tar, a hot farmyard muddy quality…read more


79.7 – Sweet and Sassy

61.3% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Highland

At once sweet and charming but also sophisticated and sassy, a joyful punch of a fresh, floral fragrant scent filled the room next to aromas of iced gems, traditional homemade Scottish tablet and pear frangipane tarts. Zingy on the palate reminded one panellist of a “cinnamon challenge”, but there was also the creamy, sweet fruitiness of papaya and passionfruit fool hiding in the background…read more

58.8% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 8yo ~ Campbeltown

Stone fruits and gooseberry tarts merged with burnt hazelnuts and salted cashew nuts while maritime aromas deepened to peat bogs, tobacco and leather. A wave of sweet medicinal phenols on the palate joined coal and smouldering leaves to give an industrial feel before fennel seeds, nutmeg and cloves complimented coffee beans and singed prunes…read more


100.35 – French Oak Rollercoaster

60.6% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 11yo ~ Speyside

A rather dizzying aroma that incorporated balsamic onions, ruby port glaze, red liquorice, aniseed, lemon cough drops, lanolin and cherry bakewell tart. Also wee notes of mango lassi and posh strawberry jam. With water we found coffee with caramel sauce along with quite surreal aromas of tarragon bernaise, eucalyptus balm, red fruit teas and winter mulling spices…read more

61.2% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 11yo ~ Speyside

Charred steak sizzled on a barbecue beside singed chestnuts while a sea breeze carried aromas of barnacles and antiseptic cream. Oily notes of toasted pine nuts then merged with cinder toffee while green fruits and tangy kiwi brought a grassy freshness. Ginger spice filled the palate before developing into hazelnuts and cocoa nibs with cloves and charred driftwood…read more


108.48 – Fire In The Hold!

62.7% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Speyside

The persuasive nose convinced us of paper burning in the hearth and chimney scrapings, Branston pickle, boquerones vinaigrettes and grilled pineapple on gammon. The palate’s initial hints of candy floss and crème brulée quickly gave way to willow twigs, jalapenos in brine, spicy smoked sausage, tinned fish and ash. 113.35 – Lemons On The Lawn

57.8% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 22yo ~ Speyside

Summery aromas of lush meadows and green grass merged with sweetly scented jasmine flowers as lemon and grapefruit brought a citrus twist. Fruity notes then developed into pineapple, melon and strawberry before vanilla suggested chocolate and custard. Certainly unusual, maybe even disputatious. One panellist was drawn to Davy Jones’ locker – the others only imagined a wooden beach hut – with picnic baskets containing cinnamon bagels, raisin oat flapjacks, mango and chilli chocolate.
