1.255 – Bright, Breezy Botanical Beast

63.3% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 8yo ~ Speyside

The nose – mm – sharp, fresh, vibrant and head-clearing – candied lemon, damson liqueur, cassia bark and charred oak. The palate is fruity, herbal and interesting – loadsa lemon (lemonade, lemon curd, verbena) and honey; then burnt twigs and star anise to finish. On the reduced nose, lemon zest is tossed around with mixed herbs (including basil and thyme) and scattered over the grass…read more

100.33 – Chamoy From Mexico

59.8% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 14yo ~ Speyside

The aroma reminded us of a Vermouth from Jerez based on a blend of Amontillado and PX Sherry and of course with the addition of herbs, fruits and of course, wormwood. Velvety soft and sweet on the palate but with a distinctive note of aniseed and gentian as well as a spicy tobacco finish…read more

9.236 – Cinnamon Snickerdoodles And Sanded Pine

58.0% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 13yo ~ Speyside

Delicate, floral and easy-going, the nose whispered rumours of pecan pie, pears Belle Helene, crystallised orange, sugared almonds, honey and butterscotch – maybe hints of pipe tobacco in a laundry. The palate proved zingy and mouth-drying, with tangerines and lemon tart, hazelnuts, coffee grounds and stem ginger biscuits….read more

13.96 – A Pinch Of Pink Peppercorns

65.6% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Highland

We made Belgian waffles with melted white chocolate, vanilla ice cream and coconut flakes as well as almond tartlets with a plum cream and pineapple cubes. A robust taste neat of wood, leather and tobacco was complimented by a sweet and spicy orange liqueur, finishing with dark cherries soaked in brandy, muscovado sugar and tarragon to which we added a pinch of pink peppercorns….read more

41.148 – A Merry-Go-Round Of Multifarious Amusements

56.9% ~ 1st Fill Ex-PX Butt ~ 14yo ~ Speyside

After eleven years in an American oak oloroso butt we moved this into a first-fill, Spanish oak PX butt. The nose is a merry-go-round of multifarious amusements – orange oil, kirsch, marzipan, vanilla and dates, with subtle susurrations of treacle, nutmeg, liquorice and dunnage warehouses…read more

53.402 – You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat

58.1% ~ Re-Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 10yo ~ Islay

This one was virtually clambering out of the glass! Immediate and massive notes of salty pasta water, industrial antiseptics, floor cleaner, germoline, herbal mouthwash and salt-baked white fish. Kelp, petrol, old creel nets and freshly poured tar. Whoever said this was a ‘medium style’ Islay? Water brought immense and pin-sharp medicines, green acidity…read more

28.73 – Porridge Of Dreams

61.0% ~ 2nd Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Highland

The neat aroma suggested pear tarts, muddled green herbs, underripe cooking apples, foaming stout and fizzy lemon sherbet. A charismatic and playful young highlander. With water it got spicier and showed notes of putty, sunflower oil, bakelite, cinder toffee and bakewell tart. The palate initially displayed sweet waxes, lemon cough drops, heather honey, ginger syrup and bailed hay….read more

55.72 – Grown-Up Indulgences

58.1% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Pedro Xminez Hogshead ~ 12yo ~ Speyside

We remarked on the shiny auburn colour as one panellist dreamed of driving an original Porsche 911, complete with leather upholstery, wooden dashboard and steering wheel with aluminium poles. The taste came as a slight surprise, dark – but not pitch black – like Pontefract cake with hints of tar and ash. We felt even more startled after the addition of water….read more

80.37 – Afternoon Tea Tot

59.9% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 9yo ~ Speyside

The nose led to a garden – sunshine, cut grass, a fruit bowl (with nectarines, tangerines and bananas) and tea served with honey on digestives and granny’s home-made tablet. On the palate, the tea was joined by Turkish coffee and we got burnt caramel, ginger snaps and chewing a twig. The reduced nose made us think of buttered crumpets, Black Forest gateau….read more

94.24 – Chilli Chunky Chips

62.6% ~ 1st Fill #4 Heavy Char Barrel ~ 10yo ~ Highland

The aroma neat reminded us of banana loaf, sticky toffee pudding, rhubarb crumble and peach cobbler while on the palate, a big sweet oaky hit at first followed by a rye-type spiciness as well as a nutty oiliness. The finish was something else, panna cotta tarts with lingonberries and chocolate. As we added water, we prepared a root beer float using vanilla ice cream garnished with a maraschino cherry….read more

113.60 – Sweet Petrichor

60.6% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Biurbon Barrel ~ 10yo ~ Speyside

A rich aroma of sandalwood aftershave, fresh linens in a warm cupboard, summery forest air, trampled dandelions and sunflower seeds popping in a hot iron pan. Beyond that we got white asparagus, runny honey and dried sage. Water continued this vibrant and fresh evolution with butterbean hummus, light olive oil, lemon peel, trail mix and flapjack with maple syrup…read more

128.18 – Dragon’s Lipstick

59.5% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Ruby Port Barrique ~ 9yo ~ Wales

The initial nose brought to mind mint chewing gum, dipped in bramble cassis and smooshed into a jar of high ester rum. We also noted poached plums, cherry calpol, cranberry jam and ruby port with cocktail bitters. Mad and a lot of fun. With water we found pure aged crusted port, treacle sponge cake, herbal pipe tobacco, ginger wine and dandelion and burdock…read more
