J. G.Thomson & Co

J.G. Thomson & Co. was launched by the Artisanal Spirits Company, which owns the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and is building a portfolio of premium brands and craft spirits.

The distillery’s first collection of small batch spirits includes a Jamaican rum, a citrus dry gin, three blended malt Scotch Whiskies featuring Sweet, Rich and Smoky expressions and two limited edition aged whiskies — one 23-year-old blended malt Scotch Whisky and one 1972 blended grain.

Emily Coyle from J.G. Thomson & Co, said . “By focusing on creating small batches and limited editions, we want to explore different tastes and take full advantage of the opportunity to experiment, innovate, marry, blend, discover and learn.”

Out of the three blended malts I am drawn to the Smoky expression as most of our readers know I am a sucker for anything Islay.

This smoky blend is from 100% Islay malts. Matured in bourbon casks and Pedro Ximinez hogsheads and butts

Let’s have a wee taste.

J. G. Thomson & Co. Blended Malt Scotch Whisky – Smoky Edition, 46% Alc/vol 70cl

Colour…Pale gold. (reminiscence of a Caol Ila dram)

Nose…Straight to an Islay beach, fresh seaweed,  bonfire ash, sitting in a hospital minor injury ward smelling the antiseptic, sea spray saltiness.

Taste…There is a sweetness but it does not overpower the smoke, grilled pineapple with honey, medicinal, deep heat muscle rub, it is almost chewy, dark chocolate.

Finish…Long finish, smoky sweetness, recently opened first aid box, a delight.

A very delightful dram has everything I love in an Islay Whisky. The RRP of this blended malt is £42.50 (as is the Sweet and Rich expressions) and is available direct from J G Thomson, specialist Whisky Shops and many on-line shops.

This is a trio that the Whisky Boys will be sure to purchase and use in a tasting where we concentrate on the flavour profile.
