Glen Garioch – A Trio Tasting Night
Nicola and I have three expressions of Glen Garioch Highland Single Malts on the table tonight.
Glen Garioch one of the Morrison Bowmore stable mates and one of The Whisky Boys favourite Highland drams.
First dram of the night is:-
Glen Garioch – Founders Reserve, Highland Single alt Scotch Whisky, Unaged, Cask: Bourbon and Sherry, 48% Alc/vol, Non-chill Filtered.
Nose…Pine nuts, oily, grassy, new oak, lemon rind, vanilla and a wee citrus burst.
Taste…Pine needles butterscotch, root ginger, porridge oats, feels quite young.
Finish…Medium, spicy and quite lively.
Number two for tonight is:-
Glen Garioch – 12 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Cask: Bourbon and Sherry, 48% Alc/vol, Non-chill Filtered.
Nose…Vanilla, mixed nuts, butter coated filo pastry, heather honey, apricot jam, orchard fruits.
Taste…Toffee apples, the tub of a candy floss machine, glazed almonds, floral oak, subtly balanced, more rounded that The Founders Reserve.
Finish…Short /medium, sweet and leaves a creamy mouth feel.
Our final Glen Garioch of the night is:-
Glen Garioch – The 15 Year Old Renaissance, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 51.9 Alc/vol.
The colour…Polished 18 ct gold
Nose…Rum molasses, ground coffee, Brazil nuts, walnut whip, treacle scone with singed edges.
Taste…Super sweet pipe tobacco, root ginger, cappuccino, a wee spice nip, runny caramel, butter shortbread.
Finish…Long, sweet and creamy, a smokey chocolate bar.
Three grand drams tonight but, Nicola and I both agreed The and with more body and Renaissance was the clear winner, more complex, it just had that wee bit more happening in the glass.
