Welsh Whisky – Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky
It’s now the 2nd of April and Dougie set off yesterday for his first outing of the season in his caravan, so Jim and Nicola were left to taste a Welsh Whisky.
On this occasion we were sent a sample bottle of Welsh Whisky – Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky with a request to have a taste and then give our comments and results.
Penderyn Distillery is the only distillery in Wales and one of the smallest distilleries in the world. There are few independent distilleries remaining, but, Penderyn is one. Penderyn’s name comes from the old Welsh village in which it is located and sits in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons mountain range.
Penderyn Distillery was opened to visitors in June 2008 with the launch of its newly built Visitor Centre.
The centre is open daily from 9.30 until 5.00 every day (except for the two weeks covering Christmas and the New Year) with the last admission being 4pm. The Whisky Boys would suggest that you pre-book. The on site fully stocked shop is also open daily at the same times

The tasting
Colour…Pale peach/rose gold.
Nicola’s tasting
Nose…Sweet and pleasant on the nose.
Taste…More sweet and fruity tastes, almost a carnival toffee apple, delicious.
Finish…Long and fruity taste lingers, lovely.
Nose…A little oak, bringing in some vanilla, sweet and mellow.
Taste…Still some oak, fresh and smooth, strawberries and other soft fruit and a little touch of spice.
Finish…Medium to long, oak and vanilla hanging on in there.
Score…3 corks.
Well this has been the biggest surprise of the year so far. This dram is a delight. Would be an exceptional after dinner tot.
Nicola loved it and even said ” I would rather drink a dram of Penderyn than most of the well known liqueur’s at the end of a meal”
We know that some of the big supermarkets (ASDA) are selling this Single Malt and we cannot encourage you enough to go out and buy a bottle, and hopefully it will be your biggest surprise of the year.
We also suggest that you visit Penderyn’s website to get more information about this dram and all the other expressions that are available, including Gin, Vodka and the Welsh Cream Liqueur called Merlyn.
We hope in the future to visit Penderyn, as we’re sure you’ve not heard the last of this whisky producer, and we expect some fabulous expressions to be on the way to the shelves in the UK and further afield.
If you purchase a bottle or two or indeed visit Penderyn Distillery, remember to tell them the Whisky Boys sent you.
