Isle of Raasay Hebridean Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Many moons ago the only distilleries on Raasay were all illicit, now we have the very first legal and licensed distillery on the island.

Every drop of spirit that is distilled on the island is matured and bottled on the island and even uses water from its own well.

The distillery has a shop and a bar that not only serves Whisky and Raasay Gin but has a grand selection of cocktails. One quite unique part of the distillery is it has luxury accommodation in the same building as the distillery, having six ensuite bedrooms and can be booked individually or for groups of up to 12.

You can also book a tour which ranges in price from £15.00 to £40.00.

Ideally, you should arrive early and have a trip around the island, go to the distillery and select your tour and finish your day trip with an overnight stay.

Let’s now open the bottle and have a wee taste.

First maturation is in a peated rye whisky cask, it is then finished in oloroso and PX quarter casks.

Colour…Polished copper

Nose…Light and fresh, red fruits and summer berries, spices like star anise and cloves, in comes the light and clean puff of smoke

Taste…Elegant, pineapple, cherry, poached pear, tinned fruit salad, crushed mixed nuts, exotic fruits lightly charred on a BBQ.

Finish…Sweetness gives way to a bonfire smoke, which builds as time goes on, and coats all corners of your mouth

A very delightful dram priced at around £85.00 this is one to keep on your top shelf and only served to your best friends.
