Deer_Island Scottish Spiced Rum

Back in 2019 Michael and Charlotte had a chat about their love of rum and thought that one day they would distill their own rum on Jura. That day arrived and they roped in two of their best friends Faye and Amy. (Mark doing all the design work and Amy is the taste tester).

The Isle of Jura has less than 250 residents and 5000 deer. Jura also goes by it’s Gaelic name ‘Diura’.

This small distillery is at Unit 3  The Pier Garage, Craighouse. Getting to Jura will involve getting at least one boat.

The Deer Island Scottish Spiced Rum is handcrafted and bottled on this fantastic but remote island.  The white rum is Scottish Distilled and aged in bourbon casks spiced with their own blend of spices and botanicals.

Deer Island Distillers are small batch producers. Each batch may just be a few hundred bottles. The Distillery releases small amounts of bottles online.

This Spiced Rum is bottled at 37.5% Alc/vol and priced at £36.00 for a 70 cl bottle.

The nose is quite sweet and on the palate I got loads of dried fruits, orange zest together with a blend of delicious spices. I tried it over ice but my favourite was to add just a splash of soda. Very enjoyable.

Currently they only supply to the U.K. but it is also available in some specialist spirit shops.
