Glenfarclas 25 Year Old

My wife and I celebrated our 25th (silver) wedding anniversary last December and Jacqueline got me a bottle of Glenfarclas 25-year-old. I think it is now time to do a wee tasting of this exceptional dram.

Glenfarclas distillery has been owned and managed by the same family since 1865. The Grants of Glenfarclas. Glenfarclas is Gaelic for ‘Valley of the Green Grassland’.

Every year since 1954 Glenfarclas has bottled an expression called The Family Cask.

Glenfarclas released in 2015 another limited edition called the £511.19s.0d Family Reserve. This was launched to mark 150 years of the Grant Family owning the distillery. The name of this bottling is a reference to the price John Grant paid for the distillery in 1865. The bottle is sold with a copy of the original bill of sale for the distillery.

Due to covid the distillery visitor centre and shop is closed until further notice. I have done a couple of tours. One of my highlights in the visitor centre is the “Ship’s Room”, a tasting room, with panelling from the RMS Empress of Australia.

This expression is fully matured in ex oloroso barrels and bottled at 43% Alc/vol.

Let’s do a tasting.

Glenfarclas 25 Year Old Speyside (Highland) Single malt Scotch Whisky – 43% Alc/vol 700 ml

Colour…Deep caramelised amber.
Nose…A curious and intriguing nose, honey, some rich sherry notes, dried fruits, toffee fudge, a soft and gentle dunnage warehouse aroma.
Taste…Takes me back to and old style Whisky, a pleasant woodiness, a congregation of soft fruits and apples, with a teardrop of water I now get some coffee and chocolate covered mixed nuts
Finish…Medium to long finish, light fruit and candy floss sweetness.

Loved this dram, would now like to compare it to the 21 and the 30 year old expressions.

Great job done by all at Glenfarclas and priced at a tad under £100.00 it is very good value.
