Licensed in 1824, it is said that a malt Whisky was distilled at Craigellachie many, many, many years prior to its licensing .
The Macallan must be the best known Speyside/Highland and in the top three/four best known Distilleries in the World. (the other three/four are also Scottish Distilleries.)
When you have a couple of mins or three go onto the website where you can watch the Macallan video together with all the information and history and a shop to browse through.
The Macallan have in their current range at least 23/24 different bottlings of various vintages, some only available at their shop or travel retail outlets, treat yourself go on a Macallan shopping spree, you know you will love it.
Again into the breach, water and Whisky tasting glasses at the ready, this was a tasting we all hoped would not disappoint, knowing the reputation of this well respected heavyweight of the Scotch Malt Industry.
Without fail we agreed the colour to be Pale Amber.
Jims tasting
Nose…Quite mixed with vanilla and spicy fruit.
Taste…Elegant and mellow and certainly benefits from its stay in the sherry and bourbon casks.
Finish…Rich with a slight sherry hint – fantastic.
Dougies tasting
Nose…Complex, sweet with a touch of pear drops.
Taste…A slight touch of oaky dryness with sherry and vanilla peaking through, very palatable an ideal aperitif.
Finish…A very pleasant lingering aftertaste.
Nicolas tasting
Nose…Sweet honeyed butterscotch.
Taste…Very smooth, no nippiness or harshness, how easy is it to sip this dram.
Finish…Medium finish does not linger too long, this can very easily become one of my favourites.
Well you have all read the above, what can we say, the Whisky Boys are well impressed, what a great dram.
We could have sat down quietly and simply finished the bottle with ease, but we are professional and kept the remains for our next guest taster as a wee additional treat.
Burns night is coming up and we could not think of a better dram to have as a pre-dinner drink or two, but would go onto a heavy peated malt to finish the evening.
So when you go out to buy your haggis, tatties and neeps please ensure that a bottle or two of The Macallan 10 year old is also on your shopping list, trust the Whisky Boys you will not be disappointed.
As ever if you visit the centre at Craigellachie, tell them the Whisky Boys sent you.
