Highland Park Scotch Malt Whisky – 12 Year Old
Highland Park Scotch Malt Whisky, Aged 12 years.
Distilled in Kirkwall, Orkney.
Scapa Distillery lies just about a mile south of Highland Park Distillery which then makes it the northern most distillery in Scotland.
Highland Park have an excellent web site, worth a visit.
This site will take you through their full and concise range of single malts, a brief history of Orkney and the distillery plus tasting notes etc.
Talking about a visit Jim and Dougie have never been to Orkney and we feel that if it was for only one reason it would be to visit Highland Park, to do the tour and see there exceptional visitor centre, maybe one day, so many distilleries so little time
You will find on every bottle, either on the label or detailed on the glass of each bottle a letter “H” which I believe was inspiration taken from the manuscript in St Magnus Cathedral.
Our tasting, full squad present, Jim, Dougie and Nicola, all ready willing and able for this dram.
Colour.. as usual we all agreed, an autumn gold, paling slightly with the addition of water.
Nose..
Nicola, smokey and sweet
Dougie, lightly peated and honey
Jim, smokey and fruity
Taste..
Nicola, with water, honey and liquorice
Dougie, with only a dash of water, this bought out sweet honey/vanilla
Jim, with water, very smooth and a touch of peat sweetness
Finish..
Nicola, very pleasant but needed water for my palate, but very nice.
Dougie, a good hint of smoke in the aftertaste, loved this tasting
Jim, lingering smooth smokiness and a little (very little) piece of chocolate, a great dram, well done
From the above you must agree that the Whisky boys had a very good tasting session, well we certainly did.
This leaves us with a problem Highland Park produce 7 or 8 Single Malts and this does not include any of their limited editions, this could take us a little time to get through them all , but this is a challenge I am sure the Whisky Boys will grab with both hands .
Looking forward to another Orkney tasting session.
If anyone out there goes to Orkney please visit Highland Park, I am sure you will be made very welcome and remember tell them the Whisky Boys sent you.
