Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength  2022

This is Bunnahabhain’s second annual release, a 12 year old cask strength expression. This full-strength Islay Whisky was matured in a mixture of first and second-fill oloroso sherry casks.

The distillery can be found at the end of a single-track road on the shore of the Sound of Islay and is best known for its signature unpeated Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

In 2021 the new visitor centre was opened and sits at the entrance to the distillery.

The distillery has a couple of tours available but the highlight tour is in Warehouse 9. You will receive three drams straight from the cask plus a taste of new make spirit.

Bunnahabhain’s core range comprises of:-

Toiteach A Dha

Stiuireadair

12 Year Old

18 Year Old

All matured in mainly ex-sherry casks, unpeated, natural colour and non-chill filtered.

In the visitor centre and online, you can also get a selection of special and limited edition expressions.

Bunnahabhain Aonadh 10 Year Old

This is a distillery that both Nicola and I visit every time we have a trip to Islay. Our last visit was in July this year. This was my first visit to the new visitor centre where you can also enjoy an uninterrupted view of Jura and its famous Paps.

I have to admit that if I  am in a bar, my go-to Whisky is the Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old.

It is now time for a wee taste of the new cask strength 12 Year Old, let’s open the bottle.

On this tasting occasion, I left Nicola to do the tasting and here are her notes.

Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength 2022 Edition,  Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 56.6 % Alc/vol 70 cl.

Nose: Oak and spice, orange trifle, tinned mandarins, baked cloves, mulled wine

Taste: Ooohhh Sooo Christmassy, transported to a flaming pudding… brandy and all, a magical hit of Christmas day, poached pears with toasted almonds

Finish: Warming and lingering, and only now does the maritime notes make an appearance. Deliciously December…

With a price of £76.95 or even less if you shop around this is an exceptional dram.
