The GlenAllachie – Batch 2 Wood Finish Range

The GlenAllachie Distillery is a relatively new distillery founded in 1967 close to the village of Aberlour.. Having had a few owners in its brief history is now owned by The GlenAllachie Consortium.

The GlenAllachie Wood Finish Series consists of signature expressions of their finest single malts. Master Distiller, Billy Walker, works with niche producers from around the world and sources small batches of outstanding casks that will complement the GlenAllachie spirit.

Last year saw the Visitor Centre opening. For the first time in it’s 50 year history the distillery is now open to visitors. So head on down GlenAllachie Distillery which is nestled at the foot of Ben Rinnes. Do a tour and tasting, find their range of malts. You can also have the opportunity to fill your own bottle straight from the cask.

The Whisky Boys have just added this Distillery to our growing list of must visit distilleries.

Let’s now have a taste of the three batch 2 Wood Finish Range.

1st
The GlenAllachie – Rye Wood Finish, 9 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 48% Alc/vol 70cl

Colour…Yellow Topaz

Nose…a very clean nose greeted me, spiced plum jam, vanilla, treacle cake
Palate…A wave of intense Demerara crunch, honey waffles, hints of orange blossom and spiced balsa wood, butterscotch pancakes
Finish…Medium too long finish, there is a sweetness of Bourbon that lingers with spices and a touch ginger spice

2nd
The GlenAllachie – Moscatel Wood Finish, 11 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 48% Alc/vol 70cl

Colour…Lemon marmalade

Nose…Overripe tropical fruits such as mango and guava, vanilla pods, chocolate covered coffee beans
Taste…Vanilla fudge, toffee apples, cola cubes , blackcurrant cordial, cereal notes, orange cocktail bitters
Finish…Drying finish of wood spices and tawny port

3rd
The GlenAllachie – Port Wood Finish, 11 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 48% Alc/vol 70cl

Colour…Glowing copper

Nose…Wine gums, molasses, rosewater and mixed herbs, luscious damson jam
Taste…Exotic figs, orange zest, toffee coated marshmallow, nutty nougat, mellow wood spices
Finish…Medium to long fruity finish, a winey note reverberated in the fine finish

A great trio, this would make an ideal introduction to wood finishes. I can see this trio being used in one of The Whisky Boys tastings. I would buy bottles of Rye Whiskey, Moscatel wine and Port. This would give our tasters a flavour of the original contents of the casks used in the finishing.

Well done to Billy Walker and his team at GlenAllachie for bringing this trio to market, a grand selection.

Buying these fine Whiskies will not break your bank, prices range from about £53.00 to £56.00. I hope to have these in the Whisky Boys cabinet soon, just awaiting a special tasting.
