Glen Moray – 12 Year Old, Smoky Peated Malt
The Whisky Boys were delighted to receive a bottle of the Glen Moray 12 Year old Smoky Peated Malt from Rachael Tyrrell of Burt Greener Communications, Edinburgh. It also came with an invite to join Iain Allan (Glen Morays Global Brand Ambassador) for a zoom tasting.

As many of our readers are aware Glen Moray Distillery and their grand range of single malt expressions are firm favourites of The Whisky Boys. Check out some previous blogs to see many expressions we have reviewed and tasted.
Other Glen Moray fans that also joined in the Zoom tasting and like Nicola and I they were very impressed by this new bottling. We all got the smoky peat but also came along some orchard fruits, lovely vanilla.
Although the Smoky peat is at the fore, there is no denying Glen Moray’s distinct flavour profile which is smooth and fruity.
This expression is matured in two different casks, American oak and European oak. The two casks give notes of a bourbon flavour and strong vanilla , fruit and gentle spices.
The level of peat is 50 ppm and the peat is from Aberdeenshire. The distillery only runs peated malt for 10 days a year.
I am now about to dive into the bottle again and give my own thoughts and tasting notes.
Glen Moray – 12 Year Old Smoky Peated Malt, Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky, 46.3% Alc/vol, 70cl

Colour…Jurassic Amber
Nose…Delicious smoke, in comes the vanilla and fruits, salty popcorn, distant hill-burnt heather and gorse, charcoaled driftwood.
Taste…Fruit baked on the BBQ, more vanilla, the peaty smoke is always on show, peppered mackerel, only requiring a teardrop of water, and it fully opens up, coal tar, lemon puffs, a grand combination of honey and smoke.
Finish…lingering and long, all coming together with the peaty smoke and the delightful fruits, some mild spice and a touch of oak.
This is high up there as one of The Whisky Boys favourite expressions. Priced at £48.75, it’s worth every penny. Another triumph from this great Elgin distillery. Well done guys. Thanks again Iain for a great Zoom tasting, hope that we can catch up soon.
