Scotch Malt Whisky Society – A Trio of Delights (Part Three)
We are now about to enjoy Batch 22, the third expression of the SMWS’s Trio of Delights. Scarlett Marzipan is a 10 Year Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky which was fully matured in a combination of American and Spanish oak oloroso-seasoned butts. This blend used only Speyside and Highland Whiskies.
Let’s enjoy a wee taste.
Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s Scarlett Marzipan Batch 22, 10 Year Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky – 50% Alc/vol, 70cl.
Colour…Rich polished mahogany.
Nose…I was greeted with a sweet and nutty aroma, toffee donuts, fudge and old oak.
Taste…Soft and ripe red berries, chocolate raisins, crushed almonds, there is an earthiness about this dram, there is no getting away from the oloroso seasoned barrels, salted pretzels, creme brulee, some bitter chocolate and orange rind.
Finish…Long finish, no getting away from chocolate orange, mouth coating, toffee and soft fruits.
Well, well this is a dram and a half. No getting away from the oloroso influence. Some would call this a “sherry bomb” This is quite a sipper, I would even consider pouring a little over some very fine Madagascar vanilla ice cream.
I would not call this a session dram, maybe ideal as a rich aperitif. This is one that The Whisky Boys will put by for a tasting in the cabin.
