The Good Spirit Tastings – 20th October 2011

Jim and Nicola, The Whisky Boys arrived in Glasgow in plenty of time to join the first tasting event by The Good Spirits Company, on arrival we were met by Shane and Matthew who were to guide us around the selection of spirits they had laid out on their tasting tables.

The Whisky Boys were more than glad to some kent faces and enjoyed a wee bit of banter with them all.

The venue for the tastings was at The Good Spirits Company shop and commenced at 7 pm and was expected to last for approx. 2 hours.

Opening hours:

Fri-Sat: 10am-8pm

So laid out in front of each of the tasters were six glasses all containing a varied array of spirits and they were:-

No. 1 Chase Potato Vodka 40% Alc/vol

No. 2 Herradura Reposado Tequila 40% Alc/vol

No. 3 Mezan XO Jamaican Rum 40% Alc/vol

No.4 Hibiki 17 Year Old Japanese Blended Whisky 43% Alc/vol

No. 5 Old Pulteney 21 Year Old Highland Single Malt 46% Alc/vol

Now this was an experience, The Whisky Boys have always stuck to Whisky tastings, albeit traveling around the world to Ireland, Wales, Canada, USA. Japan, India and even Thailand, but they have never got involved in tasting other spirits and this was a real eye opener.

Both Jim and Nicola both agreed on their top three, and they were:-

1st The Old Pulteney
2nd Hibiki
3rd The Cognac

Jim and Nicola also agreed on their least favourite and that was the Jamaican Rum, not nice, the aroma was so overpowering it would took a lot of courage to even taste it.

Shane and Matthew did a great job and were very interactive with all the tasters and on the evening they announced that they would give 10% discount on any of the bottles from the tasting selection we had this evening.

Jim and Nicola did not leave empty handed, purchasing The Laddie Ten, Glen Grant 10 Year Old, Sloane’s Premium Dry Gin and a copy of the Malt Whisky Yearbook 2012.

The cost of this smashing wee evening was £15.00 per person and you should check their website or phone for details of there now fortnightly tasting evenings, even better pop in say hallo and enjoy a chat with the lads and maybe a wee impromptu tasting may be on offer.

Remember as always tell them The Whisky Boys sent you.

  1. Glad you enjoyed the evening and hopefully you’ll be back for many more. You would think we knew about the Pulteney winning the top Whisky Bible award to include that out of all the whiskies we could have chosen 😉
