The Bunnahabhain Distillery, Islay, lies on the sheltered north-eastern coast of Islay looking over the Sound to Jura, the most southerly of the Hebridean Islands. Built in 1881 its name comes from the Gaelic, Bunnahabhain (Bu-na-ha-venn), meaning ‘mouth of the river’, a reference to the Margadale, the river from whose clear Spring waters this Whisky is distilled.
When you leave the main road you travel down a fabulous country road with great views of the Sound and the surrounding countryside, the distillery sits on a lovely pebble beach and also has it’s own cottages for rent next to the distillery.
The bottle that Jim has in collection is one that his wife Jacqueline bought him on our last trip to Islay (see Jim’s Islay Break).
This grand dram is not usually available at your local supermarket but you will get it quite easily at your nearest specialist Whisky shop or indeed on line.
If you check out Our Whisky section you will see that we do love our Islay Malts and our collection could not be without a couple of Bunnahabhain expressions, and from the photo you can see our little Bunnahabhain boat which holds three bottles. Jim bought this boat a few years ago on one of our trips to the distillery, but we don’t think they are available now, but do check with the distillery.
