Whisky Tasting – A Double from Master of Malt
On Tuesday 1st March, Nicola went round to Jim’s to have a wee double tasting of two bottles sent to the Whisky Boys from the on-line Whisky shop, Master of Malt.
We would highly recommend that all our readers visit the website of Master of Malt to see the vast range of spirits and gifts they have on offer including a personalised bottling service. We have two tastings tonight and both are single cask, Highland Park and a Caol Ila, bottled by Master of Malt.
So lets get into these single malts, and the first is :-
Highland Park 13 Year Old Single Cask, An Island Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 57% Alc/vol, 70cl.
Colour…Rich amber
Nicola’s tasting
Nose…Sherried with hints of Battenberg cake with almonds.
Taste…Smooth with more sherry, chocolate raisins and cherries.
Finish…Long and delicious.
Score…3.5 Corks
Jim’s tasting
Nose…All aroma’s are gentle with sweet sherry cake.
Taste…A creamy sweetness, chewy honey and a little drying smoke.
Finish…A little woody spice and the little smoke lingers.
Score…3 Corks
A nice little dram, very easy to drink with only a little splash of water required, a very well priced single cask, single malt at only £45.00. An ideal after dinner dram or your final sip of the evening.
Now lets visit Islay with the next tasting :-
Caol Ila 30 Year Old Single Cask, Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 57.4% Alc/vol 70cl. Distilled 1980 and Bottled 2010, One of Only 154 Bottles.
Colour. Deep amber with golden hints
Jim’s tasting
Nose…Fruity with smoke and spice.
Taste…Plenty of oak, fresh fruit some Jamaican rum, loads of vanilla coming through.
Finish…Spice and smoke lingers on and on, delicious.
Score…3.5 Corks
Nicola’s tasting
Nose…Sweet damp peat.
Taste…Too much smoke for me, but there is some fruit and spice in the background.
Finish…The smokiness still sits there, but after a little while it begins to grow on me.
Score…2.5 Corks
Well Jim loved that one, Nicola is still trying to find the love that some people have for the smoky/peaty Islay Whisky. This wonderful dram can be bought on-line only from Master of Malt for less than £100.00 a great price for an Islay single cask 30 year old. This one is an ideal aperitif.
Remember if you go online and buy a bottle, tell them the Whisky Boys sent you!!
