Jura (Virtual) Music Festival – 16th September 2021

Jura is an island of 600 deer, 200 people and 1 Distillery.

Nicola and I were delighted to be part of the Jura Virtual Music Festival. As part of this Festival there was a wee tasting of the Jura 12 Year Old and the Jura 18 Year Old.

We had the following taking us through the music and the tasting :-

Andrew Lennie – Host and Brand Ambassador.

Vic Galloway – DJ and musician.

David Latto – Folk guitarist and singer.

David provided the music and some of his songs were :-

If the Sea was Whisky
Flower of Colonsay
Hemingway’s Whisky
Whisky in my Whisky
God I’m drinking Whisky

The songs were great and some quite humorous, a grand start, middle and finish to the night.

Part way through the evening we had a tasting of a couple of fine Jura expressions.

First up was the 12 Year Old.

This rich which whisky was matured in American in white oak bourbon barrels and then finished in aged oloroso casks.

Jura 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky – 40% Alc. Vol 70 cl

The colour was a rich cinnamon.

A very inviting nose.

On the palate we got melon, fudge, quite grassy with barley, a wee touch of saltiness, toasted marshmallows, a few spices like cinnamon and white pepper, away in the distance was the smoke from a dying BBQ.

The finish was long and spicy.

Up next was the 18 Year Old.

Matured for 18 years in American white oak bourbon ex-barrels with a finish in Premier Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux red wine barriques.

Jura 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky – 44% Alc. Vol 70 cl

The colour was hazelnut.

The nose was both interesting and appealing.

On the palate we found a richness, berries, rose water, blackcurrant jam, salted caramel, kiddies lucky bag, toffee, candied fruit jellies, warming spices, and fruit is in charge of this dram.

The finish is sweet with hints of peat, an exciting and a grand example of a Jura Single Malt.

A grand night with some grand drams. It was great to hear the chat and the songs. It was almost like being back to some sort of normality.

Hopefully next year we will have the Jura Music Festival on the Island. To experience it live on Jura would be outstanding and to taste some more expressions from the distillery.
