SMWS Outturn April 2026 goes live on Friday 3rd April 2026
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society releases (outturn) several single cask bottlings of Scotch, Whisk(e)y, Rum and Gin, to name a few, usually on the first Friday of every month.

4.399 – Fish Platter on a Clyde Puffer
63.6% ~ 1st Fill Shave, Toast, Re-Char PX Barrique ~ 19yo ~ Highland ~ £150.00
A breath of fresh sea air filled the nose, and the scent of creels, crab apples and wicker picnic baskets evoked a day’s excursion along shell-strewn beaches. A seafood platter of mussels and rollmops was unpacked on deck in the salty breeze. The palate was oily, briny and complex, layering honey-smoked ham, tart candied fruits and peppered mackerel with wasabi peas and a whisper of coal dust, like a niçoise salad served aboard a Clyde puffer… read more

6.87 – Orchard Discothque
57.9% ~ 1st Fill HTMC Barrel ~ 14yo ~ Highland ~ £79.00
This was an al fresco disco of plums stewed in red wine, orange blossom and clarified butter spiked with chocolate bitters. The palate complemented the nose, bringing trail mix tossed in raisin purée at the core of an almond croissant, topped with red grapes and candied orange. Water amplified the sweetness and depth, like nosing a terracotta pot containing treacle, crushed raisins, port and gingerbread…read more

8.53 – A Walk in the Park
59.6% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Speyside ~ £55.00
The nose was a countryside ramble past hay bales, hedgerows and pine woods, with light floral touches. We were then rewarded with sweet treats including cinnamon buns, butter flapjacks, nougat and toffee. That sweetness was front and centre to the palate – honey on digestive biscuits, puff candy and strawberry jam – with a gentle, lip-smacking finish featuring hints of liquorice torpedo sweets… read more

9.315 – Warmed by the Sun
56.2% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 17yo ~ Speyside ~ £93.00
On the nose, sugared almonds, victoria sponge, and a maple and pecan danish mingled with summery, outdoor suggestions of carnations, beeswax, pine forests and lakeside irises. The anticipated sweetness arrived on the palate eventually in the shape of honey, condensed milk and custard creams, but only after the initial white pepper and pickled ginger heat settled down… read more

9.316 – Four Seasons in a Dram
55.0% ~ 1st Fill Spanish Oak Ex-PX Hogshead ~ 32yo ~ Speyside ~ £375.00
A perfect summer fruit salad of strawberries, kiwi, oranges, blueberries and pineapple in a refreshing citrus sauce opened proceedings – developing, over time, into a pick ‘n’ mix candy jar. On the palate things were much darker, delivering plenty of spice, plums, stewed prunes, maple syrup and star anise, and a finish of black pepper and chocolate with a high cocoa content. 11.77 – Sweet Smoked Strawberries
58.3% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 13yo ~ Highland ~ £78.00
A fascinating potpourri of aromas on the neat nose delivered freshly cut lime, black cardamom, white pepper, camphor and menthol balm and, hovering in the background, a mixture of lightly smoked plum barbecue sauce and a lit menthol cigarette. On the palate, chilli-spiced octopus yakitori combined with the sweet, smooth smoke of cigarillos and the herbaceous, slightly minty flavour of a shiso leaf in the finish. Water added an autumnal garden bonfire next to smoked tonka beans and a tea brewed with blackcurrant leaves….read more

28.102 – A Fountain of Sweeties
60.3% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 10yo ~ Highland ~ £65.00
Our noses, as though they were our eyes, witnessed a decorative fountain of rose water, pineapple and pear juice, linseed oil and sandalwood perfume dancing in front of us. As we tasted this artistic delight, we also found highland toffee, marzipan, cinnamon and pastel de nata topped with black cherry jam. A drop of water transported our noses into an old sweetie shop, with more toffee, some raspberry jam, candyfloss and rose fondant… read more

28.113 – Flower to the People
59.8% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 9yo ~ Highland ~ £55.00
Bright and inviting, the nose burst with avocado, apricot juice and candied lemon peel, followed by barley sugars and lemon ricotta topped with toasted currants. The palate, meanwhile, balanced sweetness with spice as chilli icing sugar mingled with pineapple cubes, vanilla cheesecake and cinnamon ice cream, finishing with musky tobacco warmth and tart lemon pith. Water transformed the profile into a floral bouquet of lavender, rosewater and beeswax, with hints of white chocolate and fennel seeds rolled in chalk dust… read more

35.402 – Domestic Bliss on the Terrace
54.7% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel ~ 12yo ~ Speyside ~ £65.00
The nose took us to a sunny summer terrace, with perfumed flowers and shrubs, chilled white wine, chamomile tea, croissants, honey, pink wafers and white peaches. The wonderfully sweet palate had lemon bonbons and cream soda, green apple and perfumed pear, plus a dry, lingering finish of carob, lemongrass and chardonnay. The reduced nose conjured a scene of domestic bliss – mum arranging flowers while kids enjoy dolly mixtures, Edinburgh rock, white chocolate bars and vanilla ice cream… read more

36.234 – Curiouser and Curiouser
58.4% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Muscat de Rivesaltes Barrique ~ 15yo ~ Speyside ~ £80.00
This spent nine years in ex-bourbon wood before encountering this first fill muscat de rivesaltes barrique. The nose was curious but fun – coconut wafers, candied nuts, salted caramel fudge and an entire universe of syrupy fruits (pineapple, pomegranate, rhubarb and ginger jam). The palate, notwithstanding a lick of ginger and coffee, was fundamentally sweet, sweet, sweet, conjuring candyfloss, dates, boozy cherries and Lithuanian candy mushrooms (grybai)… read more

39.321 – Bonbon Voyage
53.4% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 11yo ~ Speyside ~ £55.00
We found ourselves whisked away on a journey of citrus and cream. As the sails opened, so did the nose, with peach yogurt, foamy peach rings and waxed lemons, while freshly cut pineapple and a touch of sour cream added a crisp freshness. The palate set us on a course towards honey-drizzled porridge, apple slices and lemon bonbons, all wrapped in a silky sweetness. A splash of water encouraged all hands on deck to fully appreciate delicious notes of satsuma jelly, pisco sours and buttery milk chocolate biscuits… read more

We found ourselves in an autumnal forest, sitting in front of our easel and painting in oils the wonderful variety of colour that a warm, sunny October day has on offer. We took a break and opened our lunch box to reveal pan-fried courgette with honey and crumbled feta seasoned with black pepper and dill. After reduction we moved our easel up into the mountains, very close to the snow line, smelling alpine flowers and listening to the marmots singing while we whistled ‘The Hills Are Alive’ from the film The Sound of Music… read more

41.190 – Together Again
57.6% ~ 1st Fill Spanish Oak Ex-Oloroso Hogshead ~ 19yo ~ Speyside ~ £110.00
This opened sweetly, with aromas of flamed brûlée, spun sugar, honeycomb and toffee apples. The notes then moved to balsamic glaze, dates, raisins and roasted chestnuts. A shy leathery note was also uncovered. The palate proved divisive: one Panellist tasted apple, celery and vanilla pods, while another found crystallised ginger, dense wedding cake and barley sugars. With water the Panel were reunited, agreeing on savoury impressions of paprika, paella, more leather and toasted brazil nuts, balanced by sweet reminders of gooey maple syrup and a banana split… read more

46.164 – Brandy Snaps and Armagnac Rancio
58.7% ~ 1st Fill American Oak Ex-Oloroso Hogshead ~ 18yo ~ Speyside ~ £104.00
The attractive nose began with spun sugar, sultanas, dark fruits and berries; wood and wine influences gave sandalwood and Moroccan spices, sherry-soaked trifle and boozy Christmas cake. The multifaceted palate encompassed crème brûlée, brandy snaps and hot chocolate, orange peel, vanilla and myriad spices, chewing pencils and biting a boot. The reduced nose was simply amazing – hot cross buns and date molasses, forest floors, tea chests and a Spanish guitar sound hole… read more

53.510 – Maritime Mealtime
57.4% ~ 2nd Fill Shave, Toast, Rechar PX Seasoned Barrique ~ 13yo ~ Islay ~ £98.00
After nine years in ex-bourbon oak, this was transferred into a second fill PX-seasoned barrique. We imagined a beach bonfire, with a feast of honey-glazed ribs, sweet chilli salmon, crab claws and mussels. Staying on the beach, the palate found sea breezes, wood smoke and an ever-so-slightly grubby sweetness – burnt rosemary, toffee rolled in ash, salty liquorice, tarry driftwood and ‘licking a coal sack’. With water, the nose suggested boatyard workers heading to a harbour-side café for lunch… read more

59.96 – High-Tea High Jinks
55.2% ~ 1st Fill American Oak Ex-Oloroso Hogshead ~ 15yo ~ Highland ~ £90.00
Served with a plate of warm scones, our noses soon detected the lashings of clotted cream and strawberry jam. Cinnamon, sultanas and pollen-dusted danish pastries joined too. The palate was a platter of sweet chewing tobacco, treacle toffee and lightly roasted coffee with a splash of rich coconut milk. Water gave both the nose and the palate a Caribbean feel; we stirred white rum with a stick of sugar cane, watching as vanilla pods mingled with raisins, and baking spices cavorted with nectarines… read more

60.52 – Tutti Frutti Truffle

On first nosing cherry berries, gummy bears, strawberries and apricots leapt to the forefront – a true tutti frutti welcome. This juicy introduction gave way to layers of wedding cake, delicate cherry blossom, sun-drenched orange groves and the gentle perfume of lavender fields. The palate introduced drier fruit characteristics, with the influence of oak becoming more apparent: notes of orange peel, dates, champagne truffles, burnt brown sugar, bourbon biscuits and a warming mix of charred cinnamon and nutmeg, all wrapped in dusty woodiness… read more

60.74 – Sunlit Flowers and Autumn Showers
59.2% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead ~ 12yo ~ Highland ~ £74.00
On the nose, rich caramel sauce poured over vanilla fudge and buttery tablet was underpinned by sunlit gardens and greenhouse blooms. The Panel pictured a cool autumn shower drifting through the woods while savouring heather honey, peach melba and red fruit tea, all layered over stony minerality and the scent of sun-warmed, creaking aged timber. The palate opened with rhubarb and custard sweets, a cheek-tingling mouthfeel yielding to malty apple sauce… read more

64.169 – Bright, Effervescent and Full of Energy
57.6% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bodega PX Barrique ~ 16yo ~ Speyside ~ £92.50
We walked through the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, a historic market with the widest variety of traditional confections including Turkish delight, baklava, date halva and many more. On the palate, we found this bright, effervescent and full of energy with plenty of exotic spices, heather honey and a dark treacle sweetness. After a drop of water we moved to the bazaar’s carpet section to see plenty of oriental rugs unrolled to reveal their wonderful, handcrafted designs… read more

68.137 – Huckleberry Mainland
56.6% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bodega Oloroso Butt ~ 15yo ~Highland ~ £90.00
Running our noses along a length of huckleberry taffy, the experience was supplemented by molasses, sesame seeds, cinnamon and freeze-dried strawberries, and orange peel. The palate echoed the nose, with layers of orange, treacle custard, key lime pie and an accent of clove. Water served a slice of rye, liberally dressed with marmalade and honeyed figs. The finish was lighter, its top notes of vanilla mingling with ginger, kiwi and cranberries muddled with mint…. read more

80.59 – Drom Dawn Till Dusk
58.4% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bodega PX Barrique ~ 15yo ~Speyside ~ £80.00
After 10 years in ex-bourbon wood, we transferred this into a first fill American oak ex-bodega PX barrique. The nose started our day with crunchy nut cornflakes and Seville marmalade on toast and ended it with Russian caramels and ‘evening truffle hunting’. The tastes we enjoyed included chocolate malt drink and sugary espresso dregs, crème brûlée, dried figs and black bun. The reduced nose majored on chocolate raisins, cinder toffee and tiramisu, with peripheral ephemera of leather and tobacco… read more

80.67 – A Parisian Bombon
58.1% ~ 1st Fill Spanish Oak Ex-Oloroso Hogshead ~ 15yo ~Speyside ~ £80.00
Expensive aromas from a Parisian parlour arose from the glass: perfume, bergamot, a cigar box and leather. Sherry-soaked raisins, a double espresso, cinnamon and nutmeg were all detected when tasted. A second sip introduced its fruity side – juicy green apples dipped in caramel sauce, dry wood shavings and a handful of fruit pastilles. With water, the nose offered ginger spice and rye crackers, while the palate delivered a persistent sweetness led by apple crumble, custard and peanut brittle… read more

85.107 – Grandma’s Honeycomb Oliebollen
60.5% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bodega PX Barrique ~ 16yo ~Speyside ~ £92.50
The perfume of white grapes mingled with runny honey, cherry pie, butterscotch and lilacs. The palate, deeper than the nose suggested, was full of candied nuts, buttered ciabatta, shiitake mushroom broth and dark chocolate dusted with fajita seasoning. Water served a plate of oliebollen on the nose, joined by burnt honeycomb pulled from grandma’s handbag. The short finish on the palate packed in sweet thyme, balsamic glaze, vanilla and orange juice… read more

94.55 – Strawberry Ham
57.3% ~ 1st Fill Ex-Bodega PX Barrique ~ 16yo ~ Highland ~ £104.00
The neat nose suggested a strong influence from the wine, with big immediate impressions of sultana, raisin, strawberry jam, balsamic and rancio all noted. We also got pickled walnuts and a nice touch of funky, earthy dry sherry. Water revealed delicate sweeter elements such as toffee popcorn and butterscotch with sea salt, plus more aromatic, herbal qualities including toasted fennel seed and dried tarragon. The neat palate was full of crushed hazelnuts, cod liver oil, bitter dark chocolate notes and herbal cough syrup… read more

105.57 – Tangerine Trees and Marmalade Skies
55.8% ~ 2nd Fill Spanish Oak Ex-Oloroso Hogshead ~ 16yo ~Speyside ~ £95.00
Picture yourself in a sauna, cappuccino in one hand, gingerbread smeared with marmalade in the other, as that’s where the Panel began. Iced caramel frappé, wood shavings, earthy bark, currants and a dusting of cocoa powder followed. The palate delivered further (warm) gingerbread, brown sugar, sugar-roasted almonds, a walnut whip, cigarillo tobacco, a hint of marzipan and plum chutney. With the addition of water, lemon drizzle cake, pineapple juice and tangerine segments were contrasted by a dry, herbal woodiness and a tingle of ginger spice… read more

112.130 – Totally Tropical Timber
52.8% ~ 1st Fill Toasted American Oak Barrique ~ 16yo ~ Highland ~ £89.00
The initial nose was reminiscent of freshly sawn oak, crushed nettles and dried mango. Quite the cocktail, we agreed. We also noted sauvignon blanc grassiness, cream soda, metal polish and pineapple syrup. Water brought a little more cohesion around these spicier components, with lots of wood spices, pine wood, cedarwood cigar boxes and leather strop vibes. We also noted witch hazel and other medicinal herbs. The palate displayed this same tension between exotic fruits and wood spices… read more

122.89 – From Hogshead to Farm Shed
57.9% ~ 2nd Fill American Oak Ex-PX Hogshead ~ 9yo ~ Highland ~ £65.00
Join us on an agricultural field trip. As green wood burned alongside a cattle byre, the Panellists poured mild disinfectant over treacle-matured silage bales, stuffed our wellies with tobacco and sipped a splash of hunting schnapps. The palate was sweet soy and caramel, particularly medicinal and accented with bacon fries, orange peel and clove-infused shiitake mushrooms. Water gave the nose birch, popcorn and petrichor, while the palate experienced enhanced sweetness, smoked black olives, samphire and a drizzle of strawberry glaze… read more

135.78 – There’s Juice Loose Aboot This Hoose
54.2% ~ 1st Fill HTMC Hogshead ~ 17yo ~ Highland ~ £105.00
After 12 years in ex-bourbon wood this was transferred into a first fill heavy toast medium char hogshead. The nose (“super juicy”, “yummy!”) offered crème brûlée, treacle tart and peach cobbler, orange zest, beeswax and tobacco. The palate (“great texture”) suggested boozy fruits such as prunes in red wine, a buck’s fizz and brandy-fed Christmas cake, plus mango and passion fruit sorbet. On the reduced nose was yet more fruit – pears, pineapple, apple fritters and lychee joined the dominant juicy peach – supported by cinnamon, nutmeg, sandalwood and hessian… read more
