Glen Moray

The Launch of the Distilleries First Tequila Cask Finishes

Mid-September, Glen Moray launched two limited edition Whiskies, and these are:

Glen Moray – Tequila Cask Finish. (2014)

Glen Moray – Peated Tequila Cask Finish. (2014)

These two drams join the award-winning Warehouse 1 Collection. This is also Glen Moray’s first use of Tequila casks.

Iain Allan, global brand ambassador of Glen Moray, said: “With the innovative whiskies of our Warehouse One Collection, we invite whisky lovers to explore a raft of intriguing new flavours. And for this 10th release, we are celebrating our first-ever experiments with Tequila casks, resulting in two small-batch releases that take our smooth, fruity single malt to new heights”.

“Uniting vanilla softness with subtle citrus and thyme, Glen Moray Tequila Cask Finish magnifies our whisky’s sweet complexity, while Glen Moray Peated Tequila Finish is an intriguingly floral and smoky single malt. They will make the perfect gift for any inquisitive whisky lover this festive season.”

Both Whisky Boys (Jim & Nicola), when visiting Speyside, have always made a visit to this wonderfully welcoming distillery and enjoyed a wee tasting in the visitor centre. In the centre, you can also have a snack and fill your own bottle.

We have known Iain for many years and even had Iain down to do a tasting in The Whisky Boys tasting cabin.

If you search back on our website, you will see many tastings and reviews of Glen Moray and their expressions – one of our favourites.

I have to thank Rachael Tyrrell from Burt Greener Communications, Edinburgh, for sending me a sample of each new Tequila finish drams.

Let’s now have a taste.

Both of these drams are non-chill filtered, natural colour and bottled at cask strength.

The Glen Moray Tequila Cask Finish is matured for eight years in Bourbon casks and transferred into tequila casks for finishing.

2014 Glen Moray Tequila Cask Finish – Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 55.2% Alc/vol, 70 cl.

Nose…The nose takes a little time to open up, sweet with almond honey butter, vanilla Turkish Delight.

Taste…The palate held a happy balance of iced vanilla sponge cake,  a hint of turned soil in an allotment, fresh oak staves, and a small citrus burst.  Mild herbs and spices, I do get the hint of the Tequila, maybe put a little salt around the edge of the glass (only joking)

Finish…Medium to long finish, oak and light spices, a very intriguing and sophisticated dram.

Another great dram from Warehouse 1 with an RRP of £82.95. If you search the online stockists, you may get it cheaper. With only 474 bottles available, this is one to buy.

Up next is the Peated one.

2014 Glen Moray Peated Tequila Cask Finish – Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 58.5% Alc/vol, 70 cl.

Nose…Opens up with a floral note, imagine dipping ginger nut biscuits into hot and creamy chocolate, sweet with light smoke, salted popcorn,

Taste…A gentle marriage of peaty, sweet and light savoury flavours, sea spray in the air whilst sipping, singed heathery herbal notes, distant burning heather moors, I just loved the level of peatness/smokiness, a fine sipping dram.

Finish…Peaty long finish, sweet peat, the sweet peatiness continues to enchant me, with a pleasant heat on the finish, I am sipping this one slowly.

Once again a triumph from Warehouse 1. With an RRP of £92.75 and again only 474 bottles made available. This one is right up my street, I just love peated drams.
