Whilst Nicola is at the Glasgow Whisky Club’s Burns Supper, Jim decided to taste an edition from Johnnie Walker. Our regular readers will know that we selected Johnnie Walker’s Double Black as our Blended Scotch Whisky winner for 2012, so it is with great anticipation that Jim tastes this fine looking dram. (Will hopefully keep a couple of drams for Nicola to savour).

The Spice Road is the first of three from the new Explorers’ Club Collection – a range of Whiskies inspired by the travels of the Walker family and their agents and celebrating today’s travellers.

The Johnnie Walker name is world known and one of Scotland’s most iconic brands.

This expression is only available at travel retail outlets and will be priced at around $43 US. or just under £30 for the one litre bottle.

Lets have a wee tasting of this well anticipated dram.

Colour…Highland toffee

 

Jim’s Tasting

Nose…Orange and lemon peel, a light smoky spice is there, but only just. sweet honeyed oak.

Taste…Honey and vanilla cream, rich Jamaican ginger cake, last whiffs of smoke from a dying wood fire, a wee bit of espresso but benefits from a teardrop of water.

Finish…Delightful sweetness goes on and on. the ginger spice with a hint of smoke is a delight.

Score…4 Corks

This is quite an outstanding blended Scotch Whisky and The Whisky Boys will certainly get a bottle the next time they are going via a travel retail outlet. This is quite a special dram, but in my opinion it does not quite gain the heights that the Double Black reaches, but then again I do like the smokiness of the Double.

Both the Spice Road and the Double Black are highly recommended by The Whisky Boys, they should be in every Whisky lovers cabinet.
