Nikka Red Japanese Pure Malt

Nikka Red Japanese Pure Malt Whisky 43% Alc/vol 50 cl Unaged

This is one of Nicola’s recent buy’s from Master of Malt and it was brought round to Jim’s for a wee tasting.

This blended Japanese Malt Whisky is from from Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo Distilleries.

This is one of three pure or vatted malt Whiskies marketed by Nikka under one word colour titles – Red, Black and White. The “Red” is mainly based on Whisky from Miyagikyou Distillery, the “Black” is mainly based on Whisky from Yoichi and the “White” is based on Whisky from Islay in Scotland.

Nicola open this little squat bottle and poured out a wee measure, let the tasting begin.

The Tasting

Colour…Old gold with a touch of amber

Jim’s Tastingnikka-red-whisky

Nose…Oranges and lemons and a little herbs, first sniff certainly was not harsh.

Taste…A drying smoothness, going between fruits and honey and barley, my first sip gave me a little bitter taste is it me or is something missing here.

Finish…Quite fresh and medium in length, Some maltiness and the floral herbs are back. I do prefer a Yamazaki expression over this wee dram.

Score…2.5 Corks

Nicola’s Tasting

Nose…Walnuts and spice with sherry coming in.

Taste…Do not listen to Jim. I loved this dram, hot and ideal for Winter, all I think is Christmas is coming, dried fruits/cherries, the sherry is strong, this is lovely.

Finish…Long, hot, spicy and peppery, grand dram.

Score…3.5 Corks

Overall score 3 Corks

Well a little bit of a difference here, Jim not over the moon about this one and Nicola loved it.

This wee bottle is certainly available on line and maybe at one or two of the specialist Whisky Shops.

If you buy a bottle of this Japanese Vatted Malt remember to tell them The Whisky Boys sent you.
