Tomatin Whisky – Single Highland Malt 12 Year Old Scotch Whisky

It was Friday night the 7th August 2009 when Dougie phoned Jim and asked if he would enjoy a game of pool or two, Jim very quickly agreed and shortly thereafter made his way around to Dougie’s house and his pool room.

This is when Dougie sneaked one up on Jim, Dougie had laid on an impromptu tasting session, with his table all set up and a bottle of Tomatin Whisky – a 12 year old single highland malt sitting proudly in the centre of the table.

Tomatin:- meaning, Juniper bush.

Located on the eastern edge of the Monadh Liath Mountains, Tomatin has a feeling of remoteness about it. Illicit stills are part of the history of whisky distilling in Scotland; as a distilling site, illicit or otherwise, Tomatin reaches back to the 15th Century when drovers, bringing their cattle over high mountain passes to the market at Tomatin, filled their flasks from a still at the Old Laird’s House, beside the current distillery buildings

All whisky distilling requires good water. At Tomatin the Alt-na Frith (Free Burn), which springs up deep within the Monadhliath Mountains, supplies us with as much as we need. This water is combined with top quality barley, and traditional techniques are employed in all 4 stages of the distilling process – malting, mashing, fermentation and distillation. Traditionally our whisky has been used to provide fillings for the major blended whiskies in Scotland, but the emphasis now is very much on the Company own brands, first class malt and blended whiskies which have all won major international awards.

Now lets get down to the tasting.

Tomatin Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Aged 12 Years.

Colour…Pale Gold.

Dougie’s tasting

Nose…Estery/malty with a hint of honey and spice, add water to bring forth the sweetness and dull the solvent.

Taste…Medium bodied, slight flavour of malt and honey with a hint of citrus , an ideal early evening dram.

Finish…Medium finish, smooth and easy with a slight hint of citrus and a pinch of spice.

Jim’s tasting

Nose…Spice and herbal medicine, a fruity aroma coming through, not too sweet, add some water and it mellows ever so well.

Taste…The fruit continues, a clean and light dram with a very slight hint of peat, this is a great aperitif.

Finish…Very pleasant and smooth, a sweet and sophisticated medium to ling finish.

Well, well, well Dougie certainly sneaked that one up on Jim, but both agreed what a great we dram we found in this bottle. We can only wait and see if we can manage to taste the rest of the range, as said before, so many malts so little time.

For you Whisky lovers out there, please go to your shops and buy a bottle of this 12 year old you surely will not be disappointed.
